|
|
Hello all,
I have bug 1966 with stock engine 1600cc,
Recently I had an issue with my bug, the engine won't rev smoothly, I open today the valve covers for valve adjustment.
Cylinder 1 & 2 perfect 0.006
I open the valve cover of cylinder 3 & 4, a surpise was waiting for me there...
I saw that the pushrod come out of the rocker! of cylinder 4 - intake
I first thought something was broken, but everything looks fine.
I removed the rocker shaft, inspect them, they looks fine, I install it back, did valve adjustment just a little bit to cylinder 4,
Now the engine run great and smooth.
I have this bug 15 years and and the engine was rebuilt 14 years ago with little miles on it, maybe 15000 miles only.
I use BRAD PENN oil 0-30
Any idea why this happened? any suggestion?

Once you pull the head you will likely see the cause. you probably have a bent pushrod. are your valves opening and closing on that cylinder? How often do you adjust your valves? _________________ regards

I removed the rocker shaft that hold the 4 rockers of cylinder 3 & 4, I removed the pushrod, the one that come out, and it's looks good, it's not bent. I do valve adjustment every 2000 miles or closer, since I am driving my bug very little, around 1000 miles within a year.
Yes, the valves opening and closing on that cylinder, and the engine runs strong & great. |

Did you pull out the push rod and give it a roll ?
If the rod is not bent I would say that the valve stem is a little sticky.
As you do not drive it enough, this new gas sucks I have Honda engines
in pressure washers that valves stick all the time.
Suggestion run the snake oil of choice in your fuel maybe something
like Sea Foam?????? |

I didn't roll the push rod but I inspect it carefully and it looks fine, not bent at all. I install it back and the engine runs great.
I use unlesded fuel 95, maybe it is because it's unleaded fuel?
Before a few years I use to put leaded fuel 96, but it is no onger available.
I wonder how the push rod can come out from it's place?! |

I have seen it on one engine, it was the valve that jammed in the valve stem, as mentioned above. _________________ I got a historic car, every scratch got a history...

I should worry about it?
The bug currently running great.
Why the valve jammed in the valve stem? it's because the fuel?
There is anything I should do? |

Either the valve/rocker or lifter got stuck. Assuming the push rod didnt bend on its own. Most likely the problem will return |

If it was my engine, I'd recheck the valve adjustment in 100 miles. If it's good, then don't worry about it for now. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Thanks for the advice, that's what I'll do.
I will add snake oil of choice in the fuel maybe something like Sea Foam as recommended here before.
Thank you very much! |

Just eye balling the rod will not tell you if it got bent. At the hundred mile
check remove said rod and roll it an a flat surface it will be obvious if it is bent. Good luck..... |

I'll open the valve covers after 100 miles and check the pushrod and valve adjustment, if all is good, I won't touch it.
In case it will happen again, I'll replace the all 8 pushrods. I have NOS german pushrods in the box ready to install.... |
