I want to modify the wiring to the rear side marker lights so they blink when the turn signal is on. They also need to illuminate normally as a side marker when the lights are on.
Is there a way to do this?

It is simple enough to make them do that but not both things at the same time.

I believe you need to use LED bulbs in the side markers, and then attach the negative lead to the positive post on the rear turn signal. From memory, that's how I wired it on my van.
I got the idea from Dan. _________________ Casey--

Ahh--I do believe your going to need a dual filament bulb in each side marker light to get this to work and then wired to the corresponding signal wire, without back feeding through the rest of the lighting system. _________________ T.K. |

I guarantee it works as described on my van. Side marker lights function as normal, and then flash intermittently (opposite the rear lights) when that side's turn signal is engaged. _________________ Casey--

Sounds like the one-way nature of the diode keeps that from happening - a pretty clever solution. |

Here's where I got the idea:
| danfromsyr wrote: |
...for extra effect I also hook the +12v to the proper tail/running light
but I hook the -Neg to the +Pos of the blinker (turn signal) circuit..
by doing this it'll illuminate normally as a side light
but when your turn signal is on it'll interupt the LEDs -neg path and then the side light will blink as well.
I find this makes the van much more visible.. just be sure to make good weatherproof electrical connections for longevity |

x2 on the LED mod. Works perfectly as described. About a 30 minute job and simple. My next project will be to add amber LED blinkers/ markers to the lower end of my LT truck mirrors. _________________ '90 Syncro Westy EJ22 w/ decoupler & rear locker

The LED solution above is the easiest method by far. It's the same principle used on motorbikes for turn signal reminder bleepers, where the -ve of the bleeper is fed to the +ve side of the brake light bulb. Thus the bleeper goes silent when the brakes are on, so saving the rider's sanity at long stop lights. _________________ Jim Crowther

| Just take the ground wire from the side marker light and connect it to the hot side of the turn signal light. The marker light will glow normally when the running lights are on, but will go off each time the turn signal flashes. |

Sorta, except you don't use the chassis ground on the side marker at all. Grounding for the LED comes solely from the positive side of the rear turn signal. _________________ Casey--

love seeing more vans with this essential (IMNSHO) update.. I don't even consider it a mod.
and kinda cool to see me quoted above..
disconnect/don't use the oem side light -Neg wire it'll pop your turn fuse the way you have it drawn

what I do on the stock units is replace the whole bulb& holder with a red 3/4in LED Jammie
they're pretty cheap on fleabay.

they stuff right into the housing using the supplied 3/4in grommet
they're 100% waterproof and will never fail again..
for extra effect I also hook the +12v to the proper tail/running light

I used that exact LED assembly (without the rubber seal), but drilled an aftermarket reflector and then glued to light to the assembly. This makes the dome stick out so you can see the light fore/aft and from the side. Highly visible. _________________ Casey--

I used the stock hardware, just a wiring mod.
I do have a red LED bulb in the side marker assembly but that just happened to be installed prior.
