Just wanted to follow this thread...thanks for posting everything! I'm really enjoying this and, more tactically, it was nice to see the piecemeal replacement of nose metal because I'm considering the same after last week's deer strike and wasn't sure if people would just recommend replacing the whole front nose (my damage is mainly around the left headlight area).

Thanks!

A few days ago, before I saw this thread, I posted an informational to let Bay guys know there's a high-top on a very funky 69-to 71 model here in northern VA. I haven't met the guy, but the van is apparently available cheap. Those interested in a high top would want to unscrew the fiberglass top (yeah- zillions of screws) and put it on a clean bus, rather than dealing with all the rust on this one. A lot of the original (all after-market, I would guess) interior is there and worth rescuing, too. I have no $ interest in it, don't even know the guy yet, but it seems a shame to let it end up crushed. If you're interested and live in or near the mid-Atlantic/DC suburbs, send me a pm and I'll pass along info on it when the guy contacts me. So if this thread has you lusting after a high top, here's a chance to get one-save the whales! -Chris H

Have done some progress on the Highroof, have sandblasted alot of parts and bought some more new parts also. Have been scraping and cleaning the chassi the last 2 weeks and I hope to get it all primered, seam sealed, undercoated and painted during next week or weekend. Scored some NOS Eberspächer parts and bought torsionarms with new balljoints (Meyle made in Germany) pressed in from the states. Stay tuned...

Bought this new BERU glowplug GZE201 from Brickwerks in the UK, this is replacement for BZE22. The end/tip looks little diffrent from the old one, have anyone here used this new plug? I asked Jason "Notchboy" here on thesamba, who have restored some Eberspächers, but he havent tested it either. If someone have tried let us know if it works good!

Tcash: Will do when its time to install it!

This is no conversion, this is a stock Highroof from the VW factory. Congrats to your bus! Cool

Painted the chassi in epoxy primer last night. On Wednesday I will seal all seams and on Thursday I can spray the undercoating and hopefully on Sunday paint all the chassi in VW Marinoyellow! Pics will come soon...

I have been bustin ass on the chassi. It was epoxy painted last week and all seams have been sealed up too. New white undercoating have been sprayed on and is drying at the moment.

Hopefully on Wednesday I can start painting all the chassi in VW L20a Marinoyellow color. Some more small parts have been blasted and painted too.

Maybe scored a new Waeco fridge 12v for the interior also, pics on that next time.

That is one gorgeous bus Exclamation Exclamation - I worked railroad in Au. for a while and NONE of their Landcruisers looked that good.-- Their super must have loved that bus to keep it that good.

I also put up bulk heads in my Adventure wagon in case I came to a sudden stop and all the camping gear in the back went forward.

Thanks for sharing and keep up with the post- Laughing Laughing

The front beam/axel have been sandblasted and painted in Deepblack paint. Also modified the servo/brakebooster bracket so a new modern Brazil Bay booster will fit on the old Bay beam. The bracket was made 30mm extra wide, because the bolt pattern is little diffrent on the new servo. Doing this you just have to pay 140euros for a new servo instead for the original 400euros(!)

Thanks guys, here is some new pics!

Got some stuff done on the front beam/axle this week. Fitted new grease zerks to the beam, installed a new center swivelpin and bushings, 4 new needlebearings (made a tool so they were easy to pull out). They were seated 8mm inside the tubes. Used a old bearing to knock them in again, and then the tool the last bit. New dustcovers mounted too.

Got the axle bolted up in the frame on the bus and during the weekend, I will start installing torsionarms, spindles, tierods etc. More pics coming soon here and on my website: www.maindrive.org
