I just had a 1999 VW bug built in Mexico shipped to me in the Marshall Islands. It is now the only bug in the entire country.

When they shipped it from Japan they unhooked the battery cables. When they went to get the bug off the ship here they hooked up the battery cables, jumped the car, it started right up and they drove it to customs area.

However, when we went to pick it up we didn't understand about the little dashboard key for the immobilizer. So we were disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, etc. trying to figure out how to start the car. Then we realized what the immobilizer key was all about. The problem was even when we put that key in, the car still will not start.

The starter turns over but no power is getting to the engine. I am told that I have to find a way to either reset the immobilizer or disable it altogether. Can someone advise us how to do this procedures (I have a very good mechanic). Any other suggestions would be helpful.

Congratulations!

No 2 immobilizers are the same and how they are installed is entirely dependant on the whim of the installer, your first step is to find out what brand and model it is and download the installation instructions from the interwebs. Or in a worst case scenario find out where it's joined to the black wire from the ignition switch, get rid of it and reconnect the black wire together so it'll run.

This is a better close up to the original VW key fobs for the immobilizer unit on the Sedan 1996-1999. Some new and genuine key fobs (not programmed)
in my stock.

Thanks Hopkin, but my unit is like the one in the picture above that Antonio posted. it does not use the red and black transponders, it has a key (as pictured) and the immobilizer box is exactly like the one in his picture and different than the one you suggested on the 1600i.de site. but thanks so much for responding!

The way to by pass the immobilizer unit on the late VW Sedan 2000-2004 (Part No. 1BM937109 photo above) is totally different to the way on the alarm unit on the Sedan 1996-1999 (Part No. 1B0937050 A).

I want to forget about the one year only (1997) remote alarm system. The device was too sloopy.

That's the one that was in my '96. I modified the module so that it permanently bypasses the immobilizer (using the instructions on 1600i.de).
(I jumped the terminals inside the module to give the appearance that the module is installed, rather than a wire jumped across the terminals).

Not the answer to your question, but this pdf on 1600i.de has the schematics for your alarm system (section 13).
http://www.1600i.de/download/Mexican-Beetle-Circuit-Diagram.pdf

I found this thread about mk3 & mk4 immobilizers, maybe something helpful here:

This is the immobilizer in my beetle, any help would be appreciated. We've tried all kinds of tricks with the battery, etc., but no power is getting to the engine.

We rewired the immobilizer so that it is bypassed but the car is still not getting power to the engine... What could this be? Any ideas?

When you say no power is getting to the engine, does that mean there is no spark? Or that the injectors aren't delivering fuel?

You have this type of immobilizer fob, right?

When you plug it into the socket in the dash, does the red light stop flashing?

Yes, Bruce, that is the fob we have. We put the fob in and the red light stops blinking. There is just no power getting to the engine, the fuel
Is being injected.

Recheck ALL wiring. Sounds like something was missed.
