In keeping with my "Why keep this easy" moniker, I resealed the gap between the Auto transmission and the differential.

But...... I've had the lingering in 2nd for a few miles when cold before shifting into 3rd syndrone.

The fix from what I read is to clean the control valves in the Valve Body.

So guess what I did?
And I also found the classic worn check valve holes on the Valve Body separator plate.

Pan is good! No excessive "Gold Dust" or chunks ......

Remove the 10mm bolts around the Valve Body, hold it up as you pull the last one and catch the accumulator which falls out of the Left Rear corner of the valve body as you lower it.

It is out and ready for cleaning/repair......

I pulled each group of valves and cleaned them, oiled them and reinstalled....

I split the Valve Body open being careful to not tilt it and lose/mix up the balls inside....

The damaged ball seats on the separator plate. I scraped them smooth with a knife and polished the area with a green 3m pad.....

Put it back together.

Note! Hylomar dissolves with acetone. Once I figured this out cleaning up the previous application of hylomar on the pan gasket was a snap!

I applied "The Right Stuff" on the seam after cleaning the seam with carb cleaner and a brush. I rinsed it with brake cleaner and let it dry.

I used my pen knife to mash the sealant into the crack then smoothed it off with my finger....

Now we let it cure overnight and refill.

Well, my efforts at fixing the lingering cold upshift failed but my leak fix worked in spades!!!

One single drip forming (hasn't yet grown enough to drop off) after an evening of running and that's coming off the dipstick tube! 👍👍

Compared to the nightly red river it's been dropping, a single drop is nothing!

Nice - glad you achieved improvement. I am on vacation in Michigan and will have plenty of time to ponder the trans reseal on my trip. It's sitting draining in the engine stand. Diff also drained. So, I will be installing all the nice seals I got from VC to do this job. I'm sure I will be bugging you for questions.

Great........ Rolling Eyes

So, I fix the obvious washed clean by oils leak.

48 hours later the oil takes a NEW path of least resistence!

Higher up the sides of the Auto Trans/Diff seal.

AND
The 3rd gear piston cover!

I cleaned both with a wire brush and carb cleaner with a brake cleaner chaser.
Lathered on a smear of "The Right Stuff".

Let's see where it leaks next!?!?

A Winter rebuild is on the docket.

While the trans and engine may not be clean.....
They ARE dry!!!!

The second application of The Right Stuff stopped the leaks.

Seriously?!?!

Four hours left to travel and NOW you Pee on the ground?!?

No major deal, the Oring at the thermostat cover is seeping when under pressure. It leaked a few days ago and I tightened the cover bolts, but now it's back.

I have Rocky Mountain's aluminum pressure tank, I may just pop the caps pressure relief lever after filling it and drive without a pressurized system watching the gauge like a hawk.

It isn't a huge fix but I really don't feel like doing this here this morning.

I carry enough water and coolant to totally refill a drained system if on the road cooling system repairs must be made.

I carry Hylomar and "The Right Stuff" (TRS) on trips.

I may go out, clean the joint the best I can and stuff some TRS in the seam.
Let it cure for an hour and go...... See what happens.

Tell me about that bracket on your differential pan--is that a mounting for some sort of vehicle speed sensor that reads off a tone ring on the CV joint? Just curious.

Well, cleaned up the seam the best I could using some wet wipes, let it dry and squished TRS into it.

Letting it sit.

It took about a pint of water.

Fingers crossed!

That's the pickup coil for the cruise control. I mounted magnets on the inboard CV joint body.

I used two of the differential pan bolts to mount the bracket.

Ten years ago. One month after I bought my first Vanagon and our first trip; also my first lesson in water jacket seals. Luckily they seated/sealed when the engine was warm and let go at night. Went for three days this way, getting home.

Made It!!!

I ran it pressurized even.

"The Right Stuff" totally stopped the leakage.
I may go home with it as is and fix it in the comfort of home.

I'll get a new thermostat Oring locally and a can of brake cleaner and carry it with me. If the leak reappears I'll handle it as needed.

I have used Hylomar with good results. I will have to add The Right Stuff to my arsenal as well. I read about the right stuff on your website Ben, but did not realize it was a product! Embarassed I thought you were just indicating to do the job properly, which of course I now realize, includes The Right Stuff!! Laughing

Yeah..... The Right Stuff is pretty amazing!

But...... All day yesterday, then all night, not a drop of coolant on the ground this morning.

I Went out to NAPA to get a new thermostat seal to have just in case, stopped by ORielly's to pick up a pair of LED DRL's to mount for better daytime visibility without burning my H4's and when I came out there was a puddle under the thermostat!

CRAP!

But alas, a new seal IS the proper repair anyway.
I will probably Hylomar the new ORing.......
