In keeping with my "Why keep this easy" moniker, I resealed the gap between the Auto transmission and the differential.
But...... I've had the lingering in 2nd for a few miles when cold before shifting into 3rd syndrone.
The fix from what I read is to clean the control valves in the Valve Body.
So guess what I did?
And I also found the classic worn check valve holes on the Valve Body separator plate.
Pan is good! No excessive "Gold Dust" or chunks ......
Dropping the oil filter....
Remove the 10mm bolts around the Valve Body, hold it up as you pull the last one and catch the accumulator which falls out of the Left Rear corner of the valve body as you lower it.
It is out and ready for cleaning/repair......
Some views BEFORE disassembly....
I pulled each group of valves and cleaned them, oiled them and reinstalled....
I split the Valve Body open being careful to not tilt it and lose/mix up the balls inside....
The damaged ball seats on the separator plate. I scraped them smooth with a knife and polished the area with a green 3m pad.....
Put it back together.
Note! Hylomar dissolves with acetone. Once I figured this out cleaning up the previous application of hylomar on the pan gasket was a snap!
I applied "The Right Stuff" on the seam after cleaning the seam with carb cleaner and a brush. I rinsed it with brake cleaner and let it dry.
I used my pen knife to mash the sealant into the crack then smoothed it off with my finger....
Now we let it cure overnight and refill.

Nice - glad you achieved improvement. I am on vacation in Michigan and will have plenty of time to ponder the trans reseal on my trip. It's sitting draining in the engine stand. Diff also drained. So, I will be installing all the nice seals I got from VC to do this job. I'm sure I will be bugging you for questions.

Tell me about that bracket on your differential pan--is that a mounting for some sort of vehicle speed sensor that reads off a tone ring on the CV joint? Just curious.

Ten years ago. One month after I bought my first Vanagon and our first trip; also my first lesson in water jacket seals. Luckily they seated/sealed when the engine was warm and let go at night. Went for three days this way, getting home.

Made It!!!
I ran it pressurized even.
"The Right Stuff" totally stopped the leakage.
I may go home with it as is and fix it in the comfort of home.
I'll get a new thermostat Oring locally and a can of brake cleaner and carry it with me. If the leak reappears I'll handle it as needed.

I have talk about that product years and years ago, I mean 10 + years.
They will now change the name to: The Vanagon Owner Stuff

I have used Hylomar with good results. I will have to add The Right Stuff to my arsenal as well. I read about the right stuff on your website Ben, but did not realize it was a product! I thought you were just indicating to do the job properly, which of course I now realize, includes The Right Stuff!! _________________ 1981 Westfalia with a 2001 Cabrio ABA
