I love my automatic transmission! They all creep without your foot on the brake! Sounds like you're overthinking it rather than just driving it. Wink

Best way to eliminate/check vacuum leaks is to replace all the hoses and injector seals. It's a frustrating day's work but it will pay dividends!

Gheezer. You have jumped through a lot of hoops (all good), but I tend to go with Tram. Before you buy a set of gauges, play with your idle RPM. In my experimentation, I have found that the Bentley idle speed is more of a suggestion, then an exact figure. Read my signature links to see some of the things that I have done concerning the auto. IMHO, the surging when stopped is more an action of the torque converter not releasing, instead of an issue with the trans. Granted I am using a Type 4 engine that is mildly hopped up. and running dual weber DCNFs, but I have also added air conditioning to the mix.

I have also experimented with different torque converters (Type 3, Type 4, and bus) since they all have different stall speeds, I am currently using the bus. What I have found is that the lower you can run the idle speed, the smoother the engine is at a stop. As far as trans pressure, I have found that it affects shift points, more then it affects smooth idling at a stop. In fact, I am running 10PSI more pressure then the manual states so that the shift points match my cam more closely. However, the down side to this, is that if I want to drive in cruise mode, I have to lift the throttle momentarily to shift into 3rd at a low speed. My idle speed is in the 800 range, and it just sits and purrs at a stop. Now you may not be able to get away with this with FI, but, that's where I would start (lower idle speed). Give it a try and good luck

Thanks Multi69. I’ll take the idle down and see what I get.

Yup, I have to agree with Multi on getting the idea set right. It should be set in gear with the parking brake applied. This is because the torque convertor will try to pull the engine speed down at a stop sign/light and could even cause the engine to stall. BTDT had to re-set the idle speed.
However, when it's set right the AT is a dream to drive. My wife's Fastback is a fun car, as it's more like an oversize go cart. Cool

Thanks Bob, I’ll adjust it that way. What does BTDT mean? Thank you!

No problem. I've learned a few acronyms from being on this site over the years. Not all of them are directly related to VW's, but a good portion are.
