The Bay window torque spec for the CV bolts is 24 ft*lbs, while the Vanagon spec for the identical bolts is 33 ft*lbs which is 37% more clamping power. There are lots of threads on the Bay Window forum listing all the hoops to jump through to keep the bolts from coming loose but very little mention of the bolts on the Vanagon forum even though Vanagons weigh more and have a more powerful engines. |

I know how old your tires are ..........
( 4904 ) = the fourty ninth week of two thousand and four...12 years old....
On page 6 of your thread under the heading right and left tie rods ; in the first photo you can see the numbers in the sidewall of the tires .
My " OPINION " that's an old tire .
Where in florida are you ?
I give FREE welding lessons to VW owners .

So here are the photos from my last update that the gallery wouldn't load!
As you can see in the last picture, a stud was stuck in the hub but it came out without screwing anything up (pun intended) _________________ Mitchell

Little update:
Four new tires! Hankook optimos 95T rated (yea yea I know it's supposed to be 96, get over it).
My dad bought and installed all new carpet! Up the back and in the cargo deck too!
Screwed in the "restored" kick panels and the interior is now complete!
Took some hippy pals to the beach for sunset and cookies!

Nice work. I'd say on a budget your doing fine. If I were you I would save up a bit and get a harbor freight spray gun. Rent or borrow a good compressor and get a single stage paint from a paint shop and spray yourself a $200-$300 paint job. If you take your time and prep well, it will come out stellar. Id even opt to paint it the OG color if the paint shop will mix it up in a single stage for ya. _________________ The United States Constitution

You are at 2 star patina. Invest your time and money in rust treatment, repair and prevention. Remember that OG primer and paint are well bonded and usable and there are more important things in life than paint.
I will rate my camper with a 3 star patina.

khalimadeath- I'll have to take a look into that. I would love to do a sub $500 paint job from the belt line down.
Tom Powell- I am envious of your patina. I have too many holes to just leave it as is. My next update will be pictures of what the nose now looks like without all the hidden and unknown bondo. This bus is going to be cruel to me in the coming days. I am going to keep everything above the belt line the way it is because there is only surface rust and that is something I do not mind.
Thanks to all for looking! _________________ Mitchell

All new panels in rear
"Refreshed" front OG panels
New vapor barrier
New carpet and floor trim
Patched and sealed all holes
"Recushioned" the front seats
"Refreshed" kick panels

So the old man kinda shut down the welding plans (I live under his roof so he has the final say). Oh well, there is always other ways....
SO now to progress:
I've been gradually attacking the inches (literally inches) of bondo on the nose and various other spots. I was reading about alternate options for patching holes that I discovered in the nose.
I came across the "hair" solution. Most of you probably know what this is but it is basically premixed fiberglass hairs that you add hardener to.
SO... I broke out the old angle grinder and cut out a piece of rotten nose. Then cut a new piece, slathered it in "hair" and clamped it in place.
I let it set for about a day then cut it down with a cheese grater type tool and then block sanded with 50 grit.
After i got it to a place I liked it, i mixed my first ever batch of plastic filler (bondo). I think I did a pretty solid job filling the dimples and making the one patch smooth.
After l finish patching all the holes, i will do a nice skim coat to hopefully get a uniform look on the nose.
Took the bus on a 100 mile round trip kayak excursion with two pals. Was going about 55-57 MPH all day long in Florida!
Linda also went to a local VW bbq
Then, big cosmetic changes were made.... After feeling a little silly parked next to all those clean bays, it was time to make her uniform, even if she has holes, it needed to be one color (well, two actually)
Any who, here she is after a long day of painting!
Back:
Front (with the bumper put on!):
Here is the plan for the look of the bus. The black is actually going to become a backdrop for the various murals that a couple pals are going to paint on! Those plans are secret for now
Roof rack will be ordered this weekend. Wheels will be painted when the murals are completed. Sidestep will be ordered after a few paychecks and the foglight(s) will be ordered when I find one(s) I like.
Also, I have been thinking about lowering Linda a tad. Any insight is appreciated.

Little more work getting done.
Another hole fixed:
Oil sender finally hooked up.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THIS IS NORMAL.
After 15 minutes of driving 45-60 MPH in humid 85 degree weather:
Mounting location.
Built a new jump seat and used old 6.5" subs to give the bus a little more bump. It sounds awesome!
Current passenger interior shot.
And red wheels!
Roof rack should be coming in the next couple days _________________ Mitchell

Roof rack is still not here. I'm beyond fed up with Greyhound. It's been 16 days.
In other news: Today was a parts day! Got some great stuff.
2 super solid doors (a 68 door off a 71 and a later bay door that had pop up locks).
3 rear seat belts dated 1968 out of a 71.
A hatch screen out of a 69 Westy.
2 sun visors out of the same 69 Westy.
A steering wheel with one crack but still way better than mine out of the Westy.
Panels for the very back (not OEM, someones handy work but free).
And a couple bolts that I needed.
All for a whopping $375
Pics:
I got home, scrubbed the seat belts and currently have them sitting in a bucket of laundry detergent.
Scrubbed the rear panels and they came up nice.
If anyone has tips on how to fill or fix the crack and restore the steering wheel please let me know.

Same day but I would like to address the doors in a separate post.
Door Refresh and Install Part 1
Obviously someone got funky with that late bay door. The interior had fuzzy giraffe print panels.
It started life as a sage green door but was given a surprisingly great repaint.
It has a couple spots of rust that I am going to sand and skim coat putty over.
I will also be ordering Rustoleum Painter's Touch Gloss Ivory Bisque, as I have been told (by the Samba) that is is a close match to Lotus White. I am going to paint the inside of both doors and from the belt line up with this paint and continue with the primer black below the belt line.
I did not really have a great deal of time today to work on the doors because I am also getting ready for college. I should have time Sunday and next week to finish the zebra door and start the red door.
The plan for the red door is to just give a good wet sand and paint right over the red.
I am sorry the last picture is sideways!
See you soon _________________ Mitchell

Side note, picking up my roof rack tomorrow!

Door Refresh and Install Part 2
Worked on both doors today, primed the zebra door. Turned out awful.
My attack plan for the zebra door now is to remove the window and scraper (because I learned how to do that today) and do a more thorough sanding and prepping.
The red door was where I did some damage (in a good way).
I removed everything that was left on it (window scraper, felt channel, vent window, lock, door mechanism etc.
I started sanding and ran into some cruddy parts which didn't upload onto my computer so I will get those in the next update. But also came across some bondo which to tell you the truth, I don't know why it's even there (I can't feel anything on the back side of the door).

New turn signal lenses and gaskets came in and made a bigger difference than I thought especially with better bulbs.
Found a shirt and bought a shirt online to go over my seat covers:
Found:
Bought:
Put my seat belts in after a two day dunk in laundry detergent. (note the ladder )
Last and certainly not least.......My roof rack came!

Door Refresh and Install Part 3
Ground down the rust on the outer skin of the red door.
Then sprayed Rustoleum Rust Reformer
Bondo Hair ended up not working AT ALL (probably my fault so I will not go into a rant).
After some bondo
