Slick Sand went on today. It's an awesome primer that is a very high build so you can block your panels laser straight.

I had gotten the panels close with the filler, but no where near where they need to be for paint.

While the Slick Sand is curing...I'll work on the doors.

Have rusty bottoms on both cab doors.

Fortunately the outer skin on the pass side is still solid and so is the inner reinforcements.

Had to trim the Funky Green inner door bottoms a little, but they fit well.
Also, cleaned the inner surface rust from the door and coated with copper weld-thru primer.

Larry's old rear valance was pretty beat and real rusty, so he popped for a nice Funky Green one.

Had the bumpers sandblasted, which revealed some ugly old repairs especially on the rear.
Deep dents where filled with Bondo and the over riders where poorly welded on crooked.

I used heat, a body hammer and a dolly to get it relatively straight. I'll keep pecking at it until it's got the lines back and then put on a thin layer of filler.

More work on the rear bumper.

Started filling holes. There were holes drilled in it for some sort of a hitch at one time and also if you've been following this thread, there were holes torch cut to fit a Beetle muffler on it.

I cut up one of the wasted bumper guards to use as filler metal.

If you ever see a profile gauge at a swap meet or garage sale...grab it. I think I paid $2 for this one and have used it numerous times...great for body working.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The front towel bar was tweaked, so I straightened it with some heat and a vice...pulled in great.

Also had a broken bolt that still had some threads left, so I welded a nut on to the remaining threads and twisted it out while it was hot...neat trick I learned a long time ago.

Started laying some color on small parts.
Awesome to see real color after all this time!

Loving the red...it's almost dead on with the factory Ruby.
The white that Larry picked out is slightly off-white...I think it contrasts nicely with the red.
It's a base/ clear system but it kind of has a vintage look...almost single stage.

While the body is in "painter's jail"...I'm trying to stay busy on other things.

This old truck was about as rough as a gravel road when Larry bought it, but under all the crust is a lot of original parts ...I.E. a bunch of salvageable Kamax bolts.
I know the aftermarket is full of brand new replacements, but I think it's cool to save as much original stuff as possible.
A quick trip through the bead blaster and a splash of paint to protect...they'll be good for another 57 years.

Also, I like to test all switches for flawless function before using them as to ward off any electrical demons later.
For example, this old emergency flasher switch had higher than acceptable resistance readings and they fluctuated all over the board when moving the shaft from off to on.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Most of the older switches (foreign and domestic)are easily disassembled and cleaned.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I also check to make sure the internal contacts are tight and not burned or worn out.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Cleaned, lubed with a little dielectric grease and reassembled. Good to go!

Larry's truck had a hokey 8 ball shift knob on it when he got it, so I decided to make a neat custom knob out of it.

I took a paddle drill bit and cut a shallow recess in the knob, then epoxied a Deutsche Mark from the truck's year of manufacture.

Been working on doors, bumpers and such.

Epoxy, then Slick Sand, block out with 180...round 2 with the Slick Sand.
Repeat until we get the desired results.

Still leveling with 180 on the Evercoat Slick Sand
FYI...if you consider using it...it sands awesome just like butter and doesn't clog the paper.

After second round with Slick Sand, had to hit any bare spots with a little etch prime. Slick Sand doesn't recommend DTM.
The worst panel of the bunch was the brand new treasure chest door. I ended up having to use some glaze as well as numerous rounds of SS. In hindsight, I should have saved some effort and used filler, but I figured at $500 it would have been straighter than that. Oh well.

Round three on...this should be the last on the doors. They are really straight after round 2, but I need to block with 320 and then 600 before paint. Most of the product ends up on the floor anyway.

If that's funky green, you're not alone. One of the locals recently ran into the same exact thing with the treasure chest door. Took a lot of work to make it right.
