While the body is in "painter's jail"...I'm trying to stay busy on other things.
This old truck was about as rough as a gravel road when Larry bought it, but under all the crust is a lot of original parts ...I.E. a bunch of salvageable Kamax bolts.
I know the aftermarket is full of brand new replacements, but I think it's cool to save as much original stuff as possible.
A quick trip through the bead blaster and a splash of paint to protect...they'll be good for another 57 years.
Also, I like to test all switches for flawless function before using them as to ward off any electrical demons later.
For example, this old emergency flasher switch had higher than acceptable resistance readings and they fluctuated all over the board when moving the shaft from off to on.
Most of the older switches (foreign and domestic)are easily disassembled and cleaned.
I also check to make sure the internal contacts are tight and not burned or worn out.
Cleaned, lubed with a little dielectric grease and reassembled. Good to go!

After second round with Slick Sand, had to hit any bare spots with a little etch prime. Slick Sand doesn't recommend DTM.
The worst panel of the bunch was the brand new treasure chest door. I ended up having to use some glaze as well as numerous rounds of SS. In hindsight, I should have saved some effort and used filler, but I figured at $500 it would have been straighter than that. Oh well.
Round three on...this should be the last on the doors. They are really straight after round 2, but I need to block with 320 and then 600 before paint. Most of the product ends up on the floor anyway.

If that's funky green, you're not alone. One of the locals recently ran into the same exact thing with the treasure chest door. Took a lot of work to make it right. |
