I'm heading out on a camping trip in a couple of weeks in my '66 S0-42 hardtop, and was wondering how others have carried bikes with their busses? There's no trailer hitch to mount a rack to, and my bus is lacking a spare tire on the nose....I mean, I could fold the table down in the back and shove them in there, but that leaves limited space for passengers. I'd love to see some pictures of how people have done this before. P.S. I have very little money, so a repro roofrack is out of the question. Thanks. _________________ '66 SO-42

I used to have a Fiamma bike rack which fixes to the rear door like this -->
I removed it though because where the struts rest against the door they made 2 small pressure indentations _________________ SBS#27 UK chapter

Have you considered using a bike bag instead? Take the wheels off, flip the pedals and turn the bar and they pack down nicely. Fits quite well against the front bulkhead. |

I use Yakima racks for my bikes, canoe, surfboards etc.... Expensive but definitely secure and utilitarian. I'll look for a pic... _________________ Call your Cunado's:

I've seen racks like this at thrift stores before, maybe thats what I'm after...You know, one for like a hatchback car. Keepin' my eyes peeled. And yeah, if I had a SC, I'd be set for carrying bikes, not so much for camping w/ a comfy z bed:) _________________ '66 SO-42

The rack to have in the hatchback style is the Hollywood. Runs about $60 at your local bike shop. I have used both it and the Yakima roofrack. Yak was great when I lived in the city and had to worry about what happened when I parked (theft, parking by Braille) but an absolute bitch to get them on and off when on top of a Bus. You may be taller than 5'8" and have less trouble.
The Hollywood will hold three bikes if you're careful getting them on and they're not all beach cruisers. They will get some dings from each other.
The bikes (or surfboards) only go on a rack if there's too much stuff or people inside the Bus. I've gotten five guys and their mountain bikes inside if that was all that was going in.

I ran a Thule system. One extra tall guuter mount bar on the back edge of the roof. That bar had mounts for the bike forks (had to dismount the front wheels). On the rear hatch, I mounted flat foot gutter-less Thule mounts. I believe the gutterless clamps were from the Ford explorer kit. I mounted 1/4 wheel trays to the hatch bar. The front wheel went in up top and the rear wheel went in on the hatch so the bikes hung off the back of the bus. Had room for 4 bikes and could lock them to the bus and I could still access the engine bay. Sorry, no pics. |

I move my bike around a lot. Many racks later I found an American made Mega strong rack made by 1UP. This is the heavy Duty rack. You can carry 2 heavies or 3 lighter bikes, they even have a Cargo box "add-on". The rack steps Up as you add more rails so bikes will not rub another. This one is RV ok also, and few are that good. Very mechanical looking and just the best built Hitch rack any where. Very nice anti wobble too

A standard bike rack has worked well for me for a single mountain bike over long distances. Multiple bikes make such an arrangement less secure so I switch to alternatives. In our recent trip, the two mountain bikes lived inside and had to be extracted at each stop. It was a hassle at times.
You can see a single bike on my bus in this busy picture.

I purchased one of the excellent receiver hitch, bumper bracket set ups from user:jeremyrockjock....a very nice sturdy product.
I then scored a like new 4 bike hitch mount bike rack locally. Her it is holding our 4 bikes on the rear of the old '59 mango trailer bus on our way home from this year BNNTA campout

back in the day, is in 80s and 90s, the "Paulchen" bike carrier was what everybody got, or copied.

they make one for every VW bus ever made _________________ regards
