This thing has so many red flags in my opinion. You could have quite the monster on your hands. |
Why? The VIN #'s are where they are supposed to be for 1978, it was clearly a 'Rebuilt' status with a replaced front end (hence the different (1977) M-Plate) and both the VIN's show clear with US & Canada as not stolen.
It was checked and licensed in both BC and now Ontario. |
If it works for you then that is all that matters.
But you purchased it for $9k without knowing it had a rebuilt title. That is something that the seller should have disclosed in my opinion. Then the other issues that you've identified (i.e., leaky gas lines) just would make me very nervous of other issues down the road. But that could just be me being skeptical. Seeing the painted interior cabinets also just makes me cringe. _________________ 1973 Westy with a 78 FI 2000cc

Agreed on all points, I find it strange that neither of these prepurchase inspectors included that little gem of information in thier written report. And just because the owners manual doesn't show a VIN location there doesn't mean all buses (except yours) doesn't have one there, as mentioned if you are happy and got it licensed it's likely best to leave sleeping dogs lie. But next time you are crawling around underneath clean up the back side of that area where the VIN should be, betcha there's impressions of a stamped number or welds showing through.
Be careful crossing the border with that one _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Fixed my table lamp to the counter using a metal 'L' bracket to mount into the existing fresh water tank hole to avoid drilling a hole in the counter:
Wiring goes through the hole and the lamp is held on firmly with a nut on the back.
Also replaced my city water hose, and removed and replaced the sink. Installed a new tap for City Water. Need to get a plate to cover the other holes:
Glued some of my table laminate that was coming off:
Lastly, you guys were right about the VIN in the engine compartment. In good light I can see it. It was painted over and the paint filled most of it, but I could read it, and it is the same VIN as my M-Plate.
That means that technically my Westy is a 77 not a 78, and originally Chrome Yellow. Not sure why the dash VIN is different, but have checked them as clear. When it was rebuilt, for some reason it ended up with the 78 dash plate. I'm thinking that the dash may have been replaced when it was rebuilt. _________________ 1977 Westfalia - October 2015 - Current

Finally stopped procrastinating and pulled my firewall on Sunday.
Took off the air cleaner box, blower fan and other assorted things in the way.
Thought the two screws underneath were going to be the hard ones, but they came out easily. The two that gave me grief were the LH & RH bottom screws on the inside. Guess all the crap ends up down there and seizes them.
Patience, WD-40 and some elbow grease got them out finally. Think I'd like to replace them with Robertson screws as I find the Phillips screws strip too easily and don't allow as much torque.
Used a claw hammer to break the putty seal and pulled the firewall out at the bottom, then used a 2x4 piece with a hammer to tap it down free of the clips.
Lots of dust and dirt that needed vacuumed, and some marks of the obvious leakage from the filler hose to tank, but the other vapor hoses looked ok. Replaced them all anyway.
Had to stop as I was in the middle of cutting off the filler to tank hose. As it happens, I need to buy the 2.25" NAPA 1055 hose to replace it anyway - the Beetle hose I have is too small.
Will get a radiator hose pick tool too to make it easier. _________________ 1977 Westfalia - October 2015 - Current

Nice Saturday with warm weather and sunny, so tackled my fuel filler.
BTW - I was told you could remove the fuel filler pipe with the tank in place. Not sure what planet people can do that - but it was not possible.
I tried every which way to get the damn thing out. At the end of my rope, I ended up marking the position of the filler elbow in situ, and removing and replacing it through the ECU hole, then reinstalling the whole pipe.
I used foam weather strip on the firewall:
My other big frustration was trying to get the firewall back in past the tin.
I know now why people recommend removal or dropping the engine.
After cursing and swearing for a while, and bending back the tin enough to get it past, I finally got it back in place.
I replaced the original Phillips screws on the firewall with Robertson screws (Canadian Square) so next time it will be easier to remove. I love Robertson screws.
(I just realized I forgot to put in the hidden bottom two )
I then put in my new foam engine seal:
It looks awesome, went in easily and ended up being about 3 inches too long which is great, since I have heard some people come up short.
I got my seal from WW.
Got all the engine parts I took off back together and started it up and took it for a drive!
Started first time and drove great!
Pleased with myself that I got the job done! _________________ 1977 Westfalia - October 2015 - Current

I felt the same way standing in the empty engine bay, bus on a lift. it was by far one of the most aggravating jobs to do on a bus. honestly, I'd rather do ball joints _________________

In the meantime, I found this photo I took in May 2012 at Venice Beach, long before I ever even heard of the 'I'm thinking of buying a VW Van' video:
Saw these guys a few years ago in Venice and have a similar pic. Living in Saskatchewan I get very envious of the SoCal VW and surf scenes. |
