Hello all! I am new to The Samba and old VW community. My family has owned countless buses, bugs, and even a WRX powered Vanagon. So I decided to dip my feet into a Subaru powered Beetle.Project of my own! I am truly just starting the project so this is what I have so far. I have removed the wiring harnesses from the Impreza donor car and have prepped the Beetle for it's heart transplant. More pictures to come. Also, if anyone has suggestions on this swap, I'm open to anything!

Well a few bits of good news. I have the engine pulled and moving on to getting it cleaned up for installation in the Beetle. I have a stage 1 clutch and everything else on the way for mounting the engine for test fitment.

Seeing your post has finally convinced me to join. I've been wishing to do this as well for quite for some time now.
Since you are new to this swap as well, thought I'd use you for guidance for when I do finally start.
You wouldn't happen to be able to detail some of your process would you? Or maybe different items bought / costs?
Thanks, much appreciated. Good luck on your build! |

So it has been a hectic last few years and I feel the need to update this project. It has been through a few changes here and there, including a headgasket replacement which is common for these 90's EJ engines. Had trouble burping the system and it continuously would have air bubbles and I figured out why once I had the heads off
Also created a Kafer Brace and installed a trans mid-mount to tie down the drivetrain a bit more to prevent it from shaking too much. Now it does not move an inch.

A short video I did during the onset of COVID to kill boredom. This is basically where I am now with the bug. Still tweaking some stuff here and there.

A show I managed to make it to and film recently at ACME Dune Buggies.

what did you do for the wiring harness? Did you do it yourself? |

Yup, I pulled the entire wiring harness from the Impreza and simply removed any wiring that was not crucial (lights, door locks, etc.). I then matched each plug back to their counterpart and set the harness to get power through a massive relay that turns on power for all of the Subaru wiring from the Beetle ignition. The rest of the Beetle wiring is separate from the Subaru wiring. |
