I have been collecting parts for my build. So far I have several blocks and lots of heads, p/c and connecting rods. My plan is to replace the intake valves with new WW 33 mm units during the complete head rebuild. I have the following parts to use:
Porsche early normal 356 69 mm? crankshaft
Porsche 356 flywheel
Dietz dual intake manifold
Rethwish copy dual manifolds from Danny Z
28 PCI carbs
Mr. Okrasa camshaft
NOS lifters
Several sets of NOS bearings
Repo OTC pulley
Vintage Scarico 4 tip muffler
010 distributor
I have built lots of VW engines over the years but never a vintage old speed project. So I am looking for advice and input from people who are experienced in Vintage speed engines. I think the crank is a 69mm. So, I need to check piston deck height and compression. I also know from reading this forum that I have to add spacers in my lifters. I think the spacers are available from WW. I am not sure where to get and or what size cylinder spacers I need. Anyone have suggestions? _________________ '63 OG 117 Herbie Replica

I must say you have an impressive parts collection. This is my advise from recently building a 1295 cc engine with Okrasa heads:
- Don't try to change the length of the pushrods before the engine is fully assembled. You may want to do somethings with the heads and then the geometry will change anyway (I learned this the hard way).
- If you will be running the hotter cam I strongly suggest to go with bigger carbs. The dual 28's won't able to deliver enough air/fuel when the cam finally start to pull (I use the formula in the Solex carb selection guide). (Bengt Holmén is selling manifolds for 32 PBIC that can be used on 30/36 hp engines). Okrasa, Porsche and Denzel, all did use dual 32's on their performance 1300cc engines back then, so you will be in good company.
- As far as I know Porsche did not have 69 mm cranks. I guess you have an Okrasa or an Empi.
- As for cylinder spacers: I had a WW69.5 mm crank and had my own cylinder shims made (2.7 mm thick). My original Okrasa heads were a bit massaged (8.2:1 compression) so I got a nice valve train geometry without changing the pushrods. _________________ __________________________________________ |

Thanks for the reply tobiasax. All good points of advice. I will have to determine what size the crank is. I know it was removed from an old two piece Porsche engine. If the crank is bigger than 69mm, I may have rod clearance problems. I guess I should bolt the long block together inorder to figure the piston deck height and the valve rocker geometry. I will get some pictures of the crank and post them for recognition. Thanks again. Stay tuned _________________ '63 OG 117 Herbie Replica

What happened with your build? Would enjoy your experience and could benefit from your results. How did heads turn out? |

The heads look very nice. The 33 intake valves and seats fit fine. I did some light port matching to the intake manifolds and exhaust. I am going a different direction with the crank. I am staying with the stock stroke for now. I need one more Hepolite domed 77 mm piston to complete my set. I purchased new 77 cylinders from AA. From what I have read those domed pistons were used in Buses for extra power. So, they should help with higher compression. I have not given up on this build. It takes me much longer to get things done these days. I am living with advance (tertiary stage) Lyme Disease. But that is another long story. Thanks for asking. 1200 40hp pistons 1973- got doomed tops. But 1mm different pin height. _________________ I got a historic car, every scratch got a history...

I use those domed top in my WW Okrasa engine, modified the head slightly to get room for them. helps in bumping the CR. _________________ 1192CC WW okrasa
