I'm pretty certain it's aftermarket, but I currently have a red carpet kit in my 64 that I'm replacing. It's by no means perfect but I would let it go for essentially the cost of shipping. Message me if interested. |

Sounds like the paint code for metal parts is L652 Scarlet Red. Has anyone found a good "off the shelf" match?
Not yet!
Are red kick panels available?
Red kick panels are not currently available, but maybe something else we can talk Mario at TMI into reproducing. I found a decent set at a swap meet a few years ago.
What's the deal with red carpet? Is there a source that matches well?
The carpet would be German Square Weave in (scarlet)red, it is available from WW, and is a very close match to the original $$$

Also, did all pigalles come with red steering wheel/column/signal switch? Was that an additional option? Mine is black and looks to be original (I've seen the same deal on several "survivors" too.

Good stuff! I'll update the first post.
Were black models more rare than pearl white?
Feel free to add pictures of your Pigalle or any nice ones you might know of. _________________ 1976 Westy

No idea on the production numbers by color. I don't believe anyone has been able to locate any records related to the number of cars that left the factory (in this case Emden) painted a certain color or with a certain option. _________________ View my 66 build thread here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=507996 |

Mario,
Do your kick panels have the 6 round pressings (Not sure what they are called) like the originals?

What a great forum. I was led to believe the '66 Pearl White/Pigalle was a pretty rare, special order thing. From reading this thread and especially the one on door panels, it looks like it isn't so rare after all. Is this so? I do realize the Pearl White/Pigalle combo was only offered in '66; maybe that's why it could be considered rare? |

Hi Rickles,
Welcome! All 1966 deluxe type 1 cars with black or pearl white exterior came with pigalle red vinyl interiors. Yes it was a one year only thing for the seat patterns, seat frames, door panel pattern, as well as the floor mats and rear kick panels. I am not positive if other years also offered scarlet red square weave carpet. So rare? Well there were 1,080,065 cars produced in 1966. Nobody really knows! We are just trying to do our best to keep them as close to original as possible. _________________ View my 66 build thread here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=507996 |

I just refurbed my interior on my pearl white 66. I used VW LA3B Gambia red to paint the seat frames etc, its close but not exact but does look good.
Seat covers are from TMI, carpet is German red square weave from a classic car upholstery supplier, the edging is red twill cotton stitched on by a seamstress. I cut the heater outlet rings carefully with a scalpel and glued them in using contact glue.
This is similar to the carpet I used

this is the edging tape

I was removing the old seat covers off my rear seat and noticed that the paint on the frame was pristine. I called one of our local paint supply stores and they have a camera system to match paint. So I am going to take the seat frame over there in the next couple of weeks and have them mix up some PPG to match. I also just on a whim went back to the Glasurit site and did a search for SL652 and L652. I actually got a hit this time for L652 Scarlet Red 1966-67 VW. It is available in two paint lines. Line 22 and Line 68. Interestingly Line 68 is an industrial paint and shows codes for mixes of semi-gloss, satin, etc. so I have printed that out and will take it to the paint store as well to see if they can mix it. Will post the results and codes when I try them out. _________________ View my 66 build thread here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=507996 |
