I cut them off the first time, than dropped some coin on tools.
I offer the service of loosening and torqueing as a courtesy for those in my area, with vans and heavy equipment.
Love the sound of that 3/4" gun at 135lbs of air pressure.
Tony's tool to hold the hub from spinning is also worth every penny.
It will not break or bend
It is found in the classifieds. |

Ah, so that counterhold isn't just a one-off build. Cool. I've never seen that before. _________________ Casey--

I use it to test Syncro front drivelines as well.
A super heavy duty tool.

Yeah 2 minute job, 20 minutes searching and still don't have it. Been there many times of course - that's just how it goes. I probably have a full hour in building my tool (but with a headstart cuz I built the "socket" 20 years ago). Several times I almost "recycled" the socket, thinking "I'll never need that again.:"
Have "hope" I'll never need it again, but I'm enjoying my Vanagon more these days. Maybe it will help someone else? My hub-holder fits ONLY original length trailing arms though because it engages to the jackhole. _________________

My nut woulda busted that breaker-bar. Now that it's busted loose I could use that setup. Or with a torch. _________________

I went there but it was 26 pages long and the link posted above went directly to page 1, not the page that had that tool. I did try, it just wasn't working for me... Thanks for clueing me in on that tool again though. _________________ Dave O

Sure thing.
This topic has been covered multiple times.
Same answer each time.
And if TK was to answer....use heat from an oxy/acet torch
Look through the Luxury Tool thread...all 26 pages, you will find very helpful tools. |

Actually you would not have to put that much force on the breaker bar. You load the breaker bar up to a force that it can tolerate and then you whack the wrench with a hammer and the nut will come loose.

Good point ! That pic needs a sledge then.
However...... What if (as in my case) you were planning to grease ORIGINAL bearings and try to run them another 50,000 miles. I DON'T want to hit mine with a sledge. I think the torch would be a better tool to add to that pic.
Does anyone know if a propane torch is sufficient to loosen this nut? I've been surprised in the past the big effect a little heat has in breaking a 'lock' but someone must know by now if a propane torch works here.
And so what if it takes 10 minutes longer - nobody can buy more tools in less than 10 minutes, not even if Harbor Freight is next door. Plus the socket for a 3/4" air tool might cost $85 too and how much is a compressor that big? _________________

Absolutely not.
This would have had that nut off before you got done whistling Dixie. _________________ T.K. |

Any shop that has one is going to use a 3/4 or 1" impact to remove and maybe even retighten the nut. Not that much difference than hitting the wrench with a hammer. |

Heck yes it's different! Hammering around in a circle is MUCH preferable to straight DOWN.
BTW this is shade-tree, not a shop. _________________
