I have an ‘81 air cooled vanagon. On my last trip, I experienced idle issues where it would stall at idle. It also stalled occasionally while downshifting into second at low speeds. The problem started out of nowhere and she was running fine prior to the trip. I recently replaced my exhaust and am wondering if the increased back pressure may be causing an issue?
I am trying to get a better idea of how the air intake works, and which vacuum lines to check. Is anybody able to explain to me? I have posted a photo of my engine with a few markups. I am curious as to the function of the hoses marked 1. and 3. I’m also wondering what the use of the component marked 2. is. Is it a pressure regulator? If anyone can answer these and give me a general rundown on the intake that would be great!
I appreciate your help!

1, is the vacuum line for the brake booster up front.
2, is the deceleration valve.
3, Air Flow Sensor. _________________ 1982 Vanagon Camper with ALH TDI.

#2 has a big kink in it where the hose is black -- that needs to be remedied! Unkink! _________________ 84 Vanagon Tin Top, 1970 Ghia - 2014 Jetta Wagon TDI -- all sweet rides! Love em!

#3 is the hose that goes to the carbon canister -- 99% sure. _________________ 84 Vanagon Tin Top, 1970 Ghia - 2014 Jetta Wagon TDI -- all sweet rides! Love em!
