Definitely looks better with the rear bumper in place. And yes, they can be a bit finicky to get installed just right. The effort is worth it.

Most definitely! BTW when is your 57 rehab going to start?

Likewise. This year was a "feeling it out" camping experience for me. Next year will be a few more days for sure. I was at the show on Sunday but there was so much going on I lost focus on the everything I wanted to see/do.

Am I crazy? New wiring harness, (+) and (-) cables, re-furbished ignition and speedo, OG wiper switch and hard start relay.

Too late now!

This cobbled together mess is what I am trying to clean up. Also, a number of other areas that are gouged, spliced and held together with electrical tape.
Amazingly everything worked! I am hoping I can repeat that feat with it all being wired correctly.

Followed some advice on The Samba and cut the main harness in the middle and fished from there with the help of my youngest son. Relatively easy except for the portion that runs from the rear frame and into the engine compartment. It took me about an hour to get the harness to make that 90 degree turn through two holes. I also had to enlarge the hole in the front with a punch to get the brake light wire and sleeve to fit.

Main harness in front

Engine is all wired up. Using shrink tubing on all spade connections where necessary. Other than that it is all screw terminals for me. Still need to ground the tail lights

Hard start relay kit and starter are complete. I wrapped the fuel sending wire several times around the other wires for possible future use.

Still looks like a train wreck under there but will be cleaned up soon.

So first of many questions I am sure...The supplied connector block holes for the below connection are not large enough to fit the single or the double wires as shown.

Has anyone tried to drill the connector block holes larger or is it better to just use a large butt connector?

I would install it. I have had 12 volt buses that started much better in the winter with the hard start relais. And you simply don't run all the amperage to the ignition lock and back to the starter. Should have been like that from the factory.

I bought the kit several years ago when I was having starting issues and like Mandraks said it is a good idea and probably should have been like that from the factory.

Picked up some new screw terminal bulb holders for my speedo.

Replaced my headlight bulb holders since those disintegrated and/or broke when they were removed.

Cleaned up my headlight switch and shined up the spade connectors. I am assuming this is not year correct since it doesn't have screw terminals???

Hoping to get back to wiring this weekend.

Yes, the headlight switch should be screw-terminal too

Got the headlights wired. Not sure what is going on in the "Before" but they worked. Much cleaner in the "After" pic.

Any ideas on how to get the red wires from the instrument harness and main harness into the fuse block? The fuse block hole is too small to accept these two wires as they come in the harnesses (ie soldered). I noticed in a few pics I searched up that these wires appeared staggered as they enter the fuse block. I would rather not butt connect them and then run a single wire into the fuse block.

Cut the solder off and strip the wire back. Twist the wires tight and solder. If they seem too large you can remove a few strands before soldering. You don't actually need to solder but it is better in the long run.

Mine look like they have ferrules on the end and were crimped flat.

They are somewhat staggered too...

Not sure if this helps you for routing the wires to the upper connectors too. I don't have so many going through that hole behind the fuse box. It doesn't look to me like my fuse box has ever been out.

Thanks for the suggestion sgellis and Who.Me?. I believe I have a solution and will post when it is confirmed.

Who.Me? The wiring on the second picture is the same to the top connectors as mine except the two outer wires are not routed through the upper hole. Or are you saying that from the factory you think VW didn't route the two outer wires through the upper hole? Either way, thanks for the pics!

Yes. I just posted that pic in case you were particularly OCD about things like that.

Got it! Ended up cutting one soldered end and spreading the individual copper strands flatter and cutting an angled sliver from the other soldered end. I manipulated the angled soldered end a bit with some needle nose pliers and they both slide in in the fuse block. I wish I had tried the angled sliver idea prior to cutting off the entire soldered tip.

Anyway, I got lights! Headlights (high/low), turn signals, brake lights, wipers, generator, high beam, oil pressure, speedo and interior dome lights all work. And damn, that clear needle looks nice!
