That is definitely some weird looking oil, clean it off and locate the source.

I'm not seeing two poles, looks like a cheapo crimp on single spade connector to me from here.
Dead end, by any chance is your thermostat connected and functional? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
