That is definitely some weird looking oil, clean it off and locate the source.

what are we looking at? Kinda looks like a Porsche style taco plate with a sender screwed in cobbed into some kind of adapter.

Looks like a two pole sender in the 914 taco plate.

I'm not seeing two poles, looks like a cheapo crimp on single spade connector to me from here.

Dead end, by any chance is your thermostat connected and functional?
