Cool here at about 39 degrees early but sunshine so I thought about a ride today this time Route 66 heading east towards Missouri, and so I did. Very Happy I keep saying these cars run great in cool weather after an hour everything’s loosened up and running great. Ambient temp got up around high 50s perfect for me, loving it.

A more sedate drive between 60 to 65 mph not much to see but I covered about 150 miles round trip.

Here I’ve found another original stretch of road and it’s narrow but cars were narrow in the 1920s. Here’s the hysterical markers. Zoom in to read.

I tried something different today running a Bluetooth speaker off my IPhone connected to YouTube I had a never ending supply of tunes and placing it inside glovebox with door open acts as a speaker box to amplify the base and it works.

I’m down in Vinita Oklahoma looking at this Art Deco building

Coming back I’m over at the JM Davis gun museum, it’s closed on Sunday but they have a tank outside 😀

No trip from Claremore to Catoosa would be complete without looking at the blue whale

Now here’s something new along the mother road

These are dispensaries for medical marijuana. Like it or not it passed a couple of years ago and now there are literally hundreds of these businesses all over the state.

Probably the most challenging thing about driving this road is finding the original alignment. Many stretches are missing any signage to direct you to things you need to see. It’s also disappearing fast, things are being bulldozed to build more chain stores. God knows we need more subway sandwich shops and walmart stores, dollar generals.

These may be too far gone roofs caved in and I’ll bet it won’t be long before these little cabins disappear. These little cabins are actually in Springfield Missouri and I looked at them a few weeks ago, notice the snow. Very Happy

Today I’m near within 3 miles of the Mother Road and for whatever reason I’d been thinking about these two guys. One a musician the other a comedian, both gone too soon. I was the only one present today which seems fitting and somber
to just hang with these guys for a minute and remember them. No doubt a few reading this probably have never heard of either one of them, google their names to see you might even like it😀

So I drove over to Leon’s grave first it’s small but unique he is loved here in his hometown

You see my car in first pic upper left hand corner it’s actually near Leon’s grave. Sam is buried next to his brother and dad. Look at the things left for him. I remember listening to Leon with my older brother in 1973. Will O the wisp will be played today in his honor😀 if you listened to Beach Boys, Eric Clapton, George Harrison or countless others you were listening to Leon maybe without knowing it. Google “the wrecking crew” and prepare to be amazed.

Near the western end of Route 66, in Pasadena California, is the Colorado Street Bridge. It was proclaimed the highest concrete bridge in the world upon completion in 1913.

It’s been over 2 years but I’m still driving this heap. Hanks is right off 66 so it qualifies😀 I did eat here a few times but last time a huge roach was crawling up the wall and it kinda ruined my appetite

Been awhile but I still drive this thing when I can which lately is about 3 or 4 days a week. So here we are again terrorizing the streets of Tulsa Oklahoma.😂
Random pics of Route 66. Oklahoma has more original 66 road than any other state. It would take at least a week to see it all. Even odd things like Paul Harvey’s boyhood home. I can just see someone reading this saying who the fuck is Paul Harvey. Keep scrolling

Thrashers Carburetor as you can see has been there since 1946. They were still open in late 1990s but business was going downhill because of fuel injection. The interesting thing here is it was all women rebuilding the carbs and they were specialists with difficult applications like the thermoquad 4 barrel. I was sorry to see them close the doors but you’d whiz right by never knowing this as just one more odd place along the Mother Road.
The old neon signs alongside the roadway are a recent addition for motorists to look at. Last summer I drove all the way out to LA and used Route 66 much as I could but to really see it all would require at least 30 days. I never realized how popular this is with foreign tourists, my only wish would be when you come to America leave your day glow markers and pens at home. Quit writing your goddamn name on everything especially the south rim of Grand Canyon.

On the N-end of St Louie, MO, is an old bridge over the MS River. It is about 1.5 lanes wide (how cars have changed). You can't drive over it now, it is neat to walk over.

Lock your car twice.

You are referring to the Chain of Rocks bridge built in 1929, I looked at it about 2 months ago from the Illinois side. I was immediately struck by the level of attention between the two states being Missouri and Illinois. The Missouri side is developed with all the amenities food parking gas etc. you’d expect while Illinois allows their side to languish. In broad daylight my wife was scared to really get out and explore. Lots of trash and nothing but a plaque describing the bridge. It looks like a homeless encampment under the bridge. If that ain’t enough it’s also the site of a rape and double murder around 1991. Sad to see but along the entire length of Mother Road historical areas are neglected and disappearing as the land gets cleared for more important things like dollar general stores.
