"Floppy Mirror Syndrome"
There doesn't seem to be a once and done fix unless you are going to spring for powered mirror heads..... New or used.
The repairs I Read about seem short lived,
The replacement units seem to become floppy, here is a thread about mirrors for Vanagons.......
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=648791
So I decided to order a pair of side view mirrors that fit the 07 and up Jeep Wrangler, the door mounted units.
***********
EDIT: FYI.... These Wrangler Mirrors can be ordered as....
A) fully manual adjustment (as I did)
B) manual adjustment with heated glass
C) power adjustment
D) power adjustment with heated glass
E) power adjustment with built in turn signal
F) chrome with various options.
Of course price swings significantly with added options.
*********
This has been done before, twice that I've noticed by having seen photos.
Here is the mirror unit on the Jeep.....
I ordered a left and right for about $34 each, they were shipped today.
In order to get a start on the process I removed the factory mirror, I was expecting two screw holes....... Instead I got a 3rd center hole for power mirror wires......

If the new mirrors work well, the three factory holes will eventually be welded closed and painted to match the body.
If the new mirrors are HORRIBLE, the original holes may be needed and the new holes for the Jeep mirrors will be welded shut....
For now I want to close the three holes in a neat manner.
I can use the factory gasket and a block off plate, a piece of steel, a piece of ridgid plastic or a piece of Aluminum.....
Wait! My new BULLY steps came with a upper reinforcement that I Cannot use on the Van....... This would be ideal to use as a block off plate!.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=648023
A little slicing and dicing......
Also I'll need some holes but due to the textured surface it is best to drill from the rear so the bit doesn't "walk" off center.
I used the old mirror base as a template, center punched and drilled my holes. I Also countersunk the top for the factory mirror screws......
View with gasket and screws ready to install......
And here the plate is mounted......
I don't have the Jeep Mirrors yet so the exact mounting is yet to be determined but I'm guessing that it will need to be forward of the vent window pillar approximately where I put the green "X"......
Now to repeat for the drivers side.......
Here is a photo of a Vanagon with the Wrangler mirrors, I will need to make sure that the Vent Window is able to fully pivot......

Eyeballing that x location... looks like the wing windows will be prevented from opening completely ?
On this one, it's in line with the wing pillar, and kinda looks like it still may block the wing opening.

Mark...... My friendly UPS driver, just dropped off two Jeep mirrors.
Sadly it's dark, hard rain, windy and we're in a tornado watch....... No test fitting tonight!
The mirrors look nice, they have a Loonnggggg mounting stud but that can be easily modified.
Photos tomorrow if my Van doesn't get sucked up into a cyclone! And I'm in Jersey! This is mid west weather!!!

My Jeep Mirrors, Left and Right, right is disassembled in the photo.
I disassembled the mirror to enable me to locate it on the door.
The greatest concern is being able to comfortably view the mirrors. The secondary concern is that the mirror does not hinder the vent window operation.
I removed the metal mounting and used the empty plastic mount housing to locate my mirror.
Doing so required me to mark the angle the mirror sets with the metal mount in place.
I also used a 3" Magnet to help hold the mirror in place on the door, while not strong enough to hold the mirror alone, it was a great aid in placing the mirror on the door..... I held the magnet in place with clear packaging tape...
I first covered the area of the door that will accept the mirror with painters tape. A removal planning canvas.
I also used a straight edge to see how much curvature the door panel had. Vertically is very slight, Horizontally not at all.

To begin, I made note of where the factory mirror sat in relation to the drivers normal viewing angle.
Here is the drivers side, just about in line with the Vent window vertical frame. The passenger side was similar but I failed to photograph it....
I next held the mirror to the door. It required three hands but I'm way above average and got it located! You can see in the photo the vent window clears the mirror body..... Once locating this location I drew the outline of the mirror body onto the door (masking tape)
Once the Mirror mount was drawn, I located the center of the circle and drew a vertical line using a common speed square. I used the horizontal belt molding crease as the true horizontal line and drew a perpendicular line through the mount circle.
I then taped my mirror to the door using masking tape. It required some finagling to get it properly placed and vertical with the drawn line.
A lot of tape was used!!!
See the vent window clears the mirror head!!
View from the drivers seat, adjusts just fine, very solid, good size mirror head too.....

Gee I've never had to do that, say, on a cross-country road trip...(yes I have)...
Looks really good - very nice work!
