There's the socket you'll need and finally a torque stripe or witness mark has been applied to verify the fastener has been torqued and that it has not backed off. From now on we can peek back there with a mirror and know the nut is still torqued.

Two things I didn't show. 1. There is a spec measurement between fan and second backing plate, you increase this using shims between the hub and the fan. 2 there is a torque spec on the 36mm nut. Ck the Bentley you'll see it.

1. 1mm (.040") between the fan and backing plate.

2. 42 ft/lb for both the fan nut and the pulley nut. Cool

That should say 2 mm, as specified in all the Bentley manuals.

The fan lock washer is not a wave washer, which are symmetric with respect to the plane of the washer. The fan lock washer has the ends bent up
in one direction, but is flat in the perpendicular direction. It is very important to install that washer with the raised-up "wings" pointing AWAY from
the fan. Not doing so is a prime cause of destroyed fans.

Ok it's not done Very Happy thanks I've seen lots of chewed up and cracked fans where that washer seats, many moons ago I had one shell out while I was driving. Sounds bad, increases the pucker factor.

As Zundfolge says "vents out bottom". When I removed my alternator (74 Super Beetle), because it was broke (the battery would not get charged while running and the red/Alternator light would stay lit when the car was shut off and parked), I found the vent pointing up. This caused debris to literally fall into and get funneled right into the alternator. I found one of the wires going to the slip rings to be broken and missing a 1/2" section. There was alot of debris stuck in the windings. The alternator was destroyed by the simple fact some knucklhead installed the vent pointing up instead of down.

Great information!

I did this once in 1994, but have now forgotten the method I used to hold the alternator stationary when tightening the nut. Can I assume that you stick the screwdriver in the slot to engage a bolt, as when replacing a fan belt?

To hold the alternator shaft while tightening the fan nut... I put an open-end wrench on the other end of the shaft where the fan belt pulley adapter and woodruff key is mounted. The adapter is square. The fan belt pulleys will go on later.

Thanks Jim.

I'll add it to the FAQs when I get a chance.
