Nice work!, and your welds are getting better and better, practice makes perfect (and a few hours with the grinder inspires you to improve as well ) |
I did not see one when I cut it out. With all the repairs there is going to be a whole lot of strengthening done
I am going to school now for autobody and refinishing so I had a lot more practice and it also gave me the confidence to really dig in. I am working with a talented body man so the bus is in a shop with TOOLS. Makes a world of difference. _________________ The fastest thing you can do is slow down.

Started the cargo floor area by removing the top hat support and rear outriggers. Although a few of the floor supports need replacement, the gear shift guide tube will remain in because it's a great reference for fitting the new supports. Also cutting the supports at a diagonal gives much better access to then reweld them once they are fitted
The new support was then clamped to a scale, fitted and tacked.

Worked on removing th second top hat support along with the jacking points. I was originally going to patch the crossmember in an area it rusted through but it turns out the inside is covered with surface rust. The PO filled the heater duct shut. I'm thinking that could be removed as well since I am doing a Subaru conversion. Perhaps it will free up space under there.

The jacking points from Wolfburgs west don't hold the inner sill up so well. It seems like they will need some adjusting. Im also a but confused with how the inner sill, middle sill, front jacking point, floor and b pillar all come together. _________________ The fastest thing you can do is slow down.

Haven't posted in a while. Let me know if you're still following. Most of my progress gets posted on a local bus group in Wisconsin.
I wasn't happy with the jacking point from WW so I drilled out their welds and welded it back in right
welded jacking point to the outrigger
fitting inner sill
middle sill on drivers side
C pillar fabication
frame patch
Seat belt strengthener
Fit floors and marked my holes! Prepare for hours of drilling
I scuffed and epoxied the floors while there were out!!!
Burn them in
Time to move to the front

I will try to avoid cutting but won’t waste my time if it’s stubborn. _________________ The fastest thing you can do is slow down.

Removed the steering wheel and the the cab floor
So I have an original rust free dog leg with the a pillar and parts of the b-pillar still attached.
My bus needed work on the bottom of the pillars as well.
I’ve already fabricated parts of the inner b-pillar and want to use the curve in the original rust free price to fabricate the rest of what’s missing.
I’m thinking of trying to weld in the whole dog leg with the pillars attached and building from there. I already have it pretty close. If it fails I will have to drill out the spot welds and separate the pillars from the dog leg and weld in each piece separately but that is time consuming and a little more invasive.
Any thoughts?

If you weld it in whole like that, make sure you plan through how you will reach each point to weld. And what is your plan for rust prevention? Leaving the weld completely untouched on the back side will rust quickly. Just thoughts, I think they can likely be overcome. Good work so far. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

After hours and hours of staring at and measuring I cut it out in a way that I will be able to access each spot to weld it in. I’m going to spray everything in epoxy before it goes in and then clean off the area where I will weld.
When I’m done I’m thinking of drilling a hole in the top of the a pillar and b pillar and running a hose down that sprays epoxy 360 degrees _________________ The fastest thing you can do is slow down.

The cargo floor is from Wolfsburg west. Out of all the things I got from them I was happiest with the floors. I made some cuts into it to help with fitting it. Pm me if you have any questions or photos. _________________ The fastest thing you can do is slow down.
