Looking good man. I'm in the same boat as you pretty much learning rust repair and sheet metal work as I restore my bus. Great inspiration and its great to see it come back together.
I pulled my dash yesterday to see the extent of the rot, actually looks a little worse than yours and due to the collision damage on mine I'm going to source an entire nose clip May have some questions for you when I go to remove that inner valance! Great pics on that process. _________________ "He pulled the mirrors off his Cadillac ‘cause he doesn’t like it looking like he looks back"

I love them. Used them for sandblasting, painting, and welding

Yes I had an entire nose clip but I just cut what I needed. Preserve as much original, factory metal and body lines as you can. _________________ The fastest thing you can do is slow down.

Lots going on!!
Bought a 1975 front beam. I'm going to be switching to front disc brakes so the mount for the brake booster will be appreciated. I am excited to move forward to the mechanical side of things. From what I've read the 1970-1979 front beams have the same bolt pattern.
Now that I am finishing the metal work:
I noticed some rear shock mount rust I still have to address.
I am going to go around the bus grind and touch up my welds
Flip the bus using the rotisserie
Scuff with 180grit
Do some final coats of SPI epoxy (black or gray) with some reducer (Ill have 3-5 coats when I'm done since some parts I've already painted)
Ill separate my bus from the rotisserie and then move on to the front steering, suspension, and brakes
I have my wiring harness sent out to be converted for the 1.8l 1995 subaru impreza engine (60k miles). Im going to change the gaskets and timing belt while it is out of the bus. I've heard good things about KEP so as of right now I'm going with them for my subaru conversion parts. I think I will be able to weld up my own engine cross member and throttle body reverser.
I would prefer to go with the dual radiator in the engine compartment but apparently the belly radiator set up is better from what I have read.
I have to strip my transmission and paint in epoxy.
Thanks for checking in, advice is always appreciated. _________________ The fastest thing you can do is slow down.

The bolt pattern on the frame changed mid 1970, lets hope you have a later bus: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=151765
You'll also have to rearrange the parking brake cables to clear the booster, not a big deal, but be prepared. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Ooohhh I really hope not! I already paid for it. the forum you shared mentions that they change mid 69.
From what I understood, the 68 and 69 were the same as the split buses. _________________ The fastest thing you can do is slow down.

Wow sliding door and track was a super difficult repair. I bought the seal from jbugs because I wanted to make sure I’m happy with how everything closes and lines up before I started welding things in.
The seal is difficult to put in. The outer sill contains the bottom of the seal slot. I got it from klassic fab and has to grind the lip a bit. Even with that the seal was pretty tricky to get in but I’m happy with how it sits now.
The rear quarter panel was really tricky to. I ended up having to cut relief cuts into to get it to fit.
The whole bottom of this bus was rusted out. The best frame of reference I have is the remainder of the b pillar that was left in the dog legs I bought off a New Mexico bus.
Trying to recreate everything using after market parts is difficult.
I learn as I go though. Of course there are some things I would do differently if I did it again. Live and learn. The bus and I have really come a long way!

Mail day!!
An original VW front beam that will fit right in the bus!
A solid piece of German engineering in pristine condition and stripped down to bare metal! It’s from a later year which will make the front disk brake conversion a little easier!
How exciting
I was pretty surprised how accurately my camera can measure things and then display it on the object.

Metalwork is looking great. I've been considering doing the brake booster install on my '70. What is that app that measures from photos? _________________ "He pulled the mirrors off his Cadillac ‘cause he doesn’t like it looking like he looks back"

Edit: not going with this transmission. Rebuilding my 002
I found a 091 rebuilt transmission that already has the 3 rib bell housing and shortened input shaft. Wondering if it’s better to go with it than using my 3 rib transmission.
I know the 091 has stronger and taller gears which should work better with the Subaru engine.

Transmission Rebuild
All that GUNK!!!
Started off with some engine degreaser and power washed it after sitting for 15 min.
Then I used a variety of wire attachments on an angle grinder.
Discovered some damage around the bottom 4 studs in the gar carrier
Now that things were clean I made sure to go over everything in the Bentley manual before I tore anything apart
Removed bell housing
Used a puller to remove the joint flange
My friend Travis built an adjusting ring tool! its originally $180. He used the plastic lock plate as a template.
Thinking about putting in a 4.57 ring and pinion. Also thinking about installing a 091 poloquin Torque biased differential (TBD) since we plan on doing mountain driving and camping. _________________ The fastest thing you can do is slow down.

I can't go any further in the disassembly without the pinion nut removal tool.
The clutch lever was a real pain to remove
Everything is in great condition. Of course seals and bushings are going to be replaced. At this point I might put it all back together without pressing the gear train out. _________________ The fastest thing you can do is slow down.
