Please see above link for information on a Senate Bill SB 1239 in California that would make 1981 and older vehicles smog test exempt! Until a while ago cars 30 years and older were smog test exempt, but that was changed to all cars 1975 and older. Now a good Senator is trying to give us some relief by moving the cut off for mandatory smog testing to 1981. This will help some of us Vanagon owners (not me yet, I got a 1986 Vanagon, but it is in the right direction).
Please call or write to the Senators listed on the above link. These Senators are on the Transportation Committee and have the first vote on this Bill, then it moves to the full Senate if it passes.
There are 11 Senators on this important committee that need to hear from you.

same boat I am in, but if you don't mind, please push them for it anyway.
maybe next time they will bump it another 6 years and you'll be covered. it is a step in the right direction. There are some Senators that don't want to let any car off the hook, all the way back to 1967 or so. This bill was designed to be a compromise, a smaller number of cars will be effected by only a six year extension than if they did a 12 year extension of the exemption. Thus this bill will be more likely to get passed as fewer cars will be effected, more palatable to some senators. eventually the numbers of later cars will drop do to attrition and we can bring this up again and get them rolled into the exemption, maybe up to 1986 or later next time.
