Winston was built in January of 1984. Hope this helps!

Best!

Thanks jlrftype7!

Anyone else with an '84 than can check for their "slot"?

10/83 production on my Ď84, I donít have the recess.
I bet itís a end of production thing as the Ď85 models drew near to being built in later Ď84.

Just thought of another one. The rear apron below the rear bumper on the really early vans didn't have the notch in the center. The notch was added so there was clearance for the Westfalia style tow-hook.

By "Slot" I am guessing you mean this dimple (beneath my hitch)....

Does anyone have a photo of a non "Slotted" early rear apron?

1986 rear apron......

On the topic of the "slot" or "depression" in the center of the bodywork under the rear bumper, I've been researching this by looking at tons of photos.

All the 1985 & later vans have the depression.
All the 1983 & earlier vans don't have it.
In 1984 almost all DON'T have it but a few (perhaops late production) seem to have the slot.

For those of you with 1984 vans, can you please chime in on whether your '84 has the depression or not?
Rolling Eyes Question

I've seen many times where the year of the van is not what the owner actually thinks it is. There seems to be so few photos of 1984 vans with the slot that I'm considering that those few might actually be 1985 models.

Check your year with the VIN decoder here:
https://www.vanagons.org/
Scroll down, the VIN table is at the bottom. 8th character from the RIGHT will be an E for 1984 models.

Regards,
Jim

Hate to be a pedant, but my Euro spec 1989 Joker has the short door.

Recently I replaced the rear cabinet. It did not have the rear most door. I sourced another door for it. However as you can see it doesn't quite fit properly. The top shape is a little too narrow for the opening. I had another rear door and it too was the same size. The cabinet looks like a normal westy brown one. It apparently there was a small change made at some point. Anyone familiar with this better yet do they need my door and have one that fits my opening?

All Westfalia full-campers shipped to North America had the short closet door beginning with the 1989 model year (no such thing as Joker and California here). That door is one of the reasons I limited my search to '89-'91.

When I was shopping for a Westy camper I saw an '87 with the long door (shortened as in the photo above) and bought a '90 with a short door. My '85 had the long door.

I find the short door to be much more convenient due to the easier access to the closet.

Someone asked about date stamps...There are date stamps on the front of the wheel rims that show the month and year of manufacture... my spare is from 1977![/b]

Sliding door change....

When exactly did it take place?
For all of 85 or early in the 85 year run?

And exactly what are the differences?

Hi Dave,

As far as I know, all 1985 model year vans have the updated sliding door. It can be spotted by the shorter handle and deeper, but smaller handle recess.

The entire track assembly is different on the newer system and it eliminated the nylon guide bushings used on the early door.

The window aperture on the later sliding door is also slightly shorter.

Dave

Dave(s), regarding the sliding door changes, was there a change in window size?

My 1991 Carat has factory painted sound deadening on the rear engine deck and behind the rear seat while my 1980 aircooled and 1985 Westy are just painted metal.

My 1982 Diesel however has the same sound deadening treatment....

Well, yes, the title says '87, and the 10/86 seems to confirm. Front seats are both adjustable arms. Although, the driver door has the electric mirror adjuster, which does not work, and I can't find Fuse #25. Looks to me a lot like the driver side took a full front to rear swipe. It is entirely possible that the driver door was replaced with another perhaps newer one. Also, I'd guess the PO upgraded the seats if they weren't standard for that year. That old Duffer really did some amazing stuff, from all the things I have found thus far. The only thing I truly detest was to cut off the closet door.... I think the door that could swing open over the table was a year or so later? Hence, the PO was aware of that from somewhere, and doing 'upgrades' as he could. Too bad about the cabinet frame. The door is not good, but the frame, sheesh, come on!!!
