I don't know how you left coasters do it. We went from the Atlanta area to Seattle last fall. It was a great trip, but driving my 1.9 liter Westfalia into the headwinds across the plains and climbing up those mountains was a bit stressful. I'm fine cruising along below the speed limit, but crawling up those mountains, I'm thinking especially of that drive up the Little Bighorn Mountains on Alt 14, in second gear, 25 MPH. It took forever. At times I wasn't sure I'd make it. We're ready to go back, but this time I think I'm going to need a little more power.

I've been doing virtually all my own work since VW put in a rebuilt engine 15 years ago, but I don't think I'm up for an engine exchange. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any shop nearby that has experience with Vanagons, much less engine conversions. There's an outfit in North Carolina about 6 hours from me that does engine conversations: Transporter Werks (http://transporterwerks.com/). I can't find much about them here in TheSamba.com and they're not in the Roadhaus reviews. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Transporter Werks are good people. I've seen and met the crew at Overland Expo East 2018. I've also been following their work for awhile.

I actually have a friend that recently had work done on his syncro and he seemed please.

I'd let them work on my van.

Alt 14: I did that last fall with my '83 2.0 AC. After running into these guys near the top and having to stop, never did get going past 1st gear then 2nd for awhile. At least I timed the trip to be very early morning.
