First off this is not a comprehensive 12 volt conversion question!!!
I've got a complete engine that starts with F0XXXXX and I've got a spare 12 volt flywheel assembly laying around and wanted to put it in a spare buggy that just needs a power plant. the 40 horse stuff wont fit together without machining, but I couldn't really figure out whether or not the 1966 1300 crank would accept the later style flywheel.
Anyone with thoughts on this?
Thanks

You may want to confirm the 1300 crank and flywheel is o-ring sealed or has a step and gasket. But it should fit... |

As long as it is not a 20, 25, or 36 HP engine it will fit if you get the correct parts. O ring or non-O ring FW and crank is the main hurdle. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

FYI: The change from step to O-ring style crank/flywheel, if this engine somehow still retains its original crankshaft, came at engine number F0741385.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox. |

Thanks for the replies guys, unfortunatly this engine is a vw excange program engine so all bets are off, but when I remove the 6 volt flywheel, how do I tell the stepped vs non stepped apart? something about a length difference? I read about a difference in lip/length or something of the sort...I'm more of a visual person, does anyone have a side by side comparison or the ability to set one beside the other and take a picture for me?
Thanks,

From a search of the gallery for "Crankshaft End":

6V vs. 12V Crankshafts
hazetguy
On the left is a crankshaft that uses a stepped, 6V flywheel.
On the right is a crankshaft that uses an o-ring type 12V flywheel.
Notice the different depths that are machined on the ends of the crankshaft. |
