PostPosted: Sun Aug 12, 2018 8:49 am    Post subject: CA---Bought bus but title in mail to current owner Reply with quote

Hi there people
Question for the experts
I'm in CA
Scheduled to close the deal on a bus tomorrow
The scenario is :
Owner bought last week Bus wasn't in the system for years
He went to Dmv and got the bus registered into his name
He provided a copy of reg. Plates and new sticker. All paperwork looks good
My question is. Shouldn't I be able to go with him to aaa or Dmv with that paperwork a bill of sale and possibly application for duplicate title and successfully get the. Us into my name - prior to him receiving the actual title in the mail?
If you can do it with a lost title it's seems like you should be able to do it this way also
I'm hearing conflicting answers from seller and two different aaa employees

Additionally I get the hard fast rule of never buying a vehicle without receiving the title ,so if the answer is "no" to the above. Is there any other document or maybe a signed letter from seller that will save me in the case we close the deal and he for some reason doesn't want to give me title later
Shouldn't happen but just curious
Thanks in advance for your help

Yes you can go to AAA or the DMV and still transfer the vehicle. They will have a form available for that. In that situation, I would demand the seller accompany me to AAA or the DMV to make the transfer because he doesn't have a title in hand.

... I like having some old VWs with no title - then I can just work on them... is the part of the hobby, I like best. Driving them is okay, but how many can one drive? Besides, i'd rather drive one of my MR2s any day.
I like working on them - hunting for parts - being creative, treating them as an art-form - just keeping them in my barn and talking about them and just enjoy looking at them. With no title, they can't (legally) be driven and in some cases that's fun too.
Right now, have 4 such cars... are just fun to have and work on.

For North Carolina, the lost title application form is the MVR-4. This form is available at a local DMV office, the printable version from the NCDMV is NOT recognized as legal. This form can only be used if you are the last registered owner or if you can get the last registered owner’s signature notarized upon it.

The other option is to get a bonded title for the vehicle.
