Bought new brake hoses for my Westy and swapping out the fronts I can see the threads on the new hose are too long.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Installing it into the backing plate there are still threads visible but it can't be tightened down further.

Is this a known issue? Or did I get some defective stuff? Or is it just crap?

Also, if they are supposed to be this way, then do I use a washer or something on it so I can actually tighten it to the backing plate and not tighten it to the actual wheel cylinder?

It should work fine with a thick washer. The key to sealing is that it tightens down in the cylinder flare.

In reality it should make no difference but would be a little more rigid if it makes up tight to tje backing plate. If the washer is too thick it womt reach into the cylinder thread bore far enough to seat the flare which is all that seals. Ray

X2, the tip is where the sealing action takes place, but extra unsupported threads can lead to cracks and well you know what follows......, the ideal washer would be just thick enough to start to compress once the tip makes contact, maybe something softer like aluminum or copper?

I installed one side with a washer as a test and it seemed ok, but after tightening the other side down with no washer, I couldnt be sure if the washer side was tight because of the hose itself or the washer was a hair too thick so I removed it. I suppose once the hose is snug in the clamp that it should be safe from unseating.

Does anybody have any experience with other brand brake hoses doing this? It seems weird that the threaded portion would stick out so much but then again, we all know how well made most replacement parts are nowadays.

It would be 100% normal for the threads to be exposed as you do not want the shoulder to tighten against the body of cylinder or caliper. The end of the hose fitting must fit tight against the bottom of the hole in order for the fitting to seal and this can't happen if the shoulder seats against the body.

You can clearly see from your photo that the old hose fitting still had threads showing as well, just fewer than the new fitting.

It does not tighten like a nut and bolt do. The tip bottoms out to it's mating fitting.

if you cleaned up the old one, would a bunch of crap come off the base of the threads, exposing the same amount of threads as the new? it looks like a shoulder, but is it just rust and corrosion making it seem that it is? do you get what I am saying?
