Hello All-

I thought it was overdue that I share my Doka here.

I bought this truck from a seller on TS about a month ago. We spoke quite a bit, I flew down to Atlanta GA, we made the deal and I drove it home 1200 miles over 2 days.

The Doka-

it's a August 1988 build which was originally white. It was imported by the seller last year from Germany. It has a 1.9 TDI (ahu) swap which was done in Germany. Clock showed 75 ish KM when I bought it (actual miles/kms unknown)

My short term plans are to just drive the truck and slowly upgrade some small things like the interior. It has smart car seats up front which have to go. They are not horribly uncomfortable but do not have arm rests and do not recline.

Anyways here are a few pix-

Lucas

It translates to burro in English, but is it a trade name or something?

Yeah it has the typical seam rust- nothing horrible but its lurking. Seller was pretty open about it

Not so bad that I want to use it as a DD here in New England all year round.

After reading some threads in this forum and hunting around for the last month I found some Eurovan seats for 100 bucks on craigslist to replace my "smart" seats.

They are pretty clean overall. I found a thread on how to modify them to fit and it looks fairly straight forward.

Here are the current seats

I honestly don't know a lot about it or these swaps in general but I guess it's common in Germany to swap them out for the late 90's TDIs

I don't have much info except a manual for the engine with some receipts in German for the swap, timing replacement in 2014 and turbo replacement.

Here is the only pic I have right now I will take some more soon. I would like to address the rats nest of relays and wires they mounted on a rail across the bay but it runs so well I don't want to screw it up. I am getting around 30mpg on mixed highway back-road use

It looks like the engine is from a longitudinal layout: Passat or Audi, thus you should have a custom made passenger side engine mount made to replace the original T3 diesel aluminum one: the holes don't match on that side Wink

Not the cleanest swap, but yeah, hard to touch it if it runs so well. Confused

That's a nice truck. Certainly not the tidiest swap, but I like wiring work, so I'd look forward to the opportunity to clean up that engine compartment. If I had a Doka, I'd much prefer a 15 degree install for an inline engine, since there's a lot more vertical space available. What kind of transaxle gearing is in there?

They swapped from a 50° factory set up, that makes more sense in Germany Wink: replace the block, done. Wink

Thought I would update this thread

the saga:

After the fall of 2016 the AHU was smoking pretty badly and it was apparent it would need to be rebuilt or replaced. Over the winter 16/17 I found a donor AHU for small money and thought it would do nicely and cost about as much as a rebuild...well as it turns out they made a couple versions of the AHU block and I needed one with different mounts.

So in the Spring of last year I contacted Quality German and bought a nice low mile AHU...but it arrived and was wrong too Evil or Very Mad and had to send that back. Then after going back and forth he told he has a super low mile AFN I could buy. He send a video of it running and lots of pix so I pulled the trigger on that.

Last summer a buddy of mine (who I owe greatly) did the transplant. The rat-nest of wires remained in place as we thought we could make that work. After the swap we couldn't talk to the ECU and the thing was in limp mode... it ran but just wasn't right at all.

I contacted David Marshall at Fast Forward Automotive and we went back and forth and I decided to buy an ECU from him and send him a harness. The harness ended up being too much work and he built me a harness from scratch - I got back about as plug harness & ECU and play as you can get with one of these things. This is a real brief we hit sangs the whole way and even the harness from F.F. needed tweaks to work (some pin-outs flipped or marked)

So I now have a much more derivable DOKA now and the rat nest is gone!

-It has a AFN TDI (110hp) super clean from Quality German
-Scratch built harness from Fast Forward
-Malone tuned ECU which adds even more umpf
- Immobilizer Delete
- EGR Delete

Big ups to:
My friend who put way too many hours into this for me & will remain anonymous
David Marshall at Fast Forward Automotive in BC
Quality German

It's actually scary powerful and need to keep my foot out of it for fear of what it will break. I'll ad some photos and more info on FF standalone harness

Sorry to hear of all the hassles, but it sounds like you ended up with a trick new engine. Can't wait to see pics.

Thanks man- NO PS in mine either but doesn't' really need it with 15" BFGs on it now and proper tire pressure. Even under low speeds it turns fine. Plus I kinda like the bigger steering wheel. NO AC either which isn't fun on 90+ days. But I am used to that.
