|
|
Vehicle:
1977 Type 2 with 2L dual carb engine
A metal scraping sound has gotten progressively worse over past few weeks (limited driving). Sound very obvious under 25 mph. Sound goes away when applying brakes.
Put bus on a jack stand spinning wheel and sound present. Pulled wheel and sprayed brake cleaner and inspected. No fix. Sound remains.
Is this a brake pad replacement, caliper replacement, or something else?
Thank you |

should be nothing but a brake pad 'spreader' in there, held in by simple pins.
Guess would be time for a front wheel bearing inspection/repack.
Did you wiggle/rotate the hub after the wheel/tire combo was off?
It's a 30k mile inspection thing. Inner & outers four pieces. |

No, after cleaning I put tire back on, then thought to spin it. Grinding sound occurred. |

Loose caliper mounting bolts? Loose splash shield ditto? Missing pad spreaders or pins? Loose axle nut (right side has RH thread, grease cap must be removed to check)? _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

I second the wheel bearing. Check it!!!!
You certainly do not want this to happen

What may have happened is that one of the brake pads has jammed in the caliper and so a part of the contact area of the disc is getting rusty.
Rust is about 3x larger in volume than steel, so rust on the disc expands and hits the pads until it wears off, or it abrades the pads, leading to less pressure on the rusty area and so on, so the rusty area grows in size.
Inspect both sides of the brake disc- the area that the pads operate on should be shiny. On mine I had an issue where the inside of the brake disc only had about 50% area that was being contacted by the pad.
I could have had the brake discs skimmed but I replaced them with new, cleaned up the calipers and fitted new pads. _________________ Ancient vehicles and vessels

Bought new calipers and pads. Installed but one pad has clearance and the other scrapes.
I’ll post pics
Any suggestions |

Rust in the caliper or a siezed piston ? _________________ Ancient vehicles and vessels

Both pads should touch lightly after the brakes have been applied and released. If there is rust, the rust will need a few miles to wear off. When installing new pads on an old worn rotor, I like to knock the edge of the rotor down with an angle grinder to improve the fit of the new pads. |

Take a good close look and determine exactly what is scraping on what. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities
