Been wanting one of these for along time. Was talking to my friend one day who lives in Tucson Arizona about it, and he says he knows of one available. Deal was made and car was shipped up to me in Oregon. It's a 68 Manual trans injected.
Now for the fun part, car hasn't ran for who knows how long. Last lic tag was 1990. It has obvious signs that they were trying to make it run, or chasing a problem. Has 1 computer hooked up and another laying there, fuel pump removed and sitting under the front hood, MPS removed and sitting on the floorboards. Fuse block hanging out of dash, relays half disconnected. So yeah I have my work cut out for me in diagnosing whats what. The Arizona sun has completely fried all the soft rubber and interior, but what was really important and valuable to me is that the steel is in great shape with near zero rust cancer. Only two spots on rear parcel shelf. Stay tuned for progress. and questions from me on this early FI system that i have lots to learn about. I have already ordered a Bentley manual since I seen it mentioned several times in this forum and have been told to get.
Arriving in Oregon

Lotus White/ India Red! Great color combo. Looks very original and complete. Can't wait to see it around! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Very nice canvas to start with to make what you want.
I am in Oregon and have recently restored a 68 fastback so I might be able to answer some of your questions.
Tram is the FI guy. But lot's of information on the Samba.
Good luck and I look forward to seeing your progress. |

Thanks guys, I've already located a nice front bumper, side moldings, and rocker moldings from Mike Fisher here on the forum. Plans are to get it running and drive able. Lower it a little, I already have some new 2.0 wheels and new tires for it. I've ordered new window rubber for it from ISP. Than I will just drive it the way it is and work on the new upholstry as I go. |

Let me just pop in here to say that when people start referring to Fastys as "parts cars" don't take it personally. It's an inside joke that, as I recall, a bunch of us started to drive a fellow who goes by FASTBACKDON bat shit crazy... only to find out that FASTBACKDON didn't really need any help in that department.
The idea was that Fastbacks are only good for parts for Squarebacks and Notchbacks.
Maybe you'll prove us wrong like BerT3 did. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

BTW, speaking of '68 parts cars and BerT3, well... if you want some inspiration, grab a scotch and soda and a tasty Churchill cigar, sit back, and enjoy:

Funny, I was going to say the same thing. But your car looks very original and complete. No need to get parts from those other styles.
I like the fastback body style. It's the only reason I bought an old VW. Seems like VW did too. Look at their old advertising. |

Funny story about the Fastback.
When VW started to "officially" import Type 3s to the USA in 1966 (you always could special order one- but it was like knowing to ask for "animal style" at In N Out at your VW Stealer) they decided to substitute the Fastback for the Notchback in USA. After that, you couldn't even really special order a Notch here which is why 1600 Notchbacks are so hard to find in the USA. Second- design Notches are far rarer than 1962/3 "big 1500" cars!
I was never able to get a straight answer from my contacts "who were there" like the Kvale brothers or Helmut Becker as to why VW decided to do this. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

The same people did confirm, however, that the Pigalle, Teak, and maybe Azure* cars were a special edition to "celebrate" the USA debut of the Type 3. These cars were built August- December of 1965 and heavily promoted. Type 34 had these options available for the entire model year... sort of odd since the 34 was not in the official VW USA Type 3 lineup.
*Printed material exists for the 1966 Azure option, and pieces have surfaced. I swear I saw a light blue fastback like this in the dealership in around 1977 or so, but no digital cameras and phones back then. I remember it being "just like those red and brown interior cars, but blue" very distinctly. I thought it was ugly, and wondered why anybody would ever buy one!! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

So I've already started to evaluate the FI compents that have been removed and laying through out the car. I started with the fuel pump. As Tram and others have noted here on the forum, I sunk it in diesel over night and wired it to a battery. At first there was no life accept for a small week buz. but after a couple of smacks around the casing with a rubber mallet the bees started coming to life in the hive so to speak. Started pumping, I let it do this for a minute than I reversed the polarity and it spit it all back out with a bunch of crap. I repeated this several times. Each time more improvement than the last. BUT I was not getting any output. So I wound up removing the top plate and found the output completely clogged and the pressure relief piston stuck seized. Worked with it, finally was able to get it free and moving again. Put it all back together and now I have output flow.. Yay . i put my finger over the outlet and was able to shoot a stream across the room, forced it shut and the pressure regulator worked and bypassed too. So it looks like I now have a good fuel pump. |

If you want a brand new pump, you can use the Airtex E2000. Or Jim Adney ([email protected]) can rebuild your old one with new seals -- it's only a matter of time until it starts to leak; that's what happened to mine. I went with the Airtex. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

So this item, which I believe is the MPS was laying on the front floorboards. I don't know if or how much its been screwed with literally. I took the cover off and found just a little bit of oil in it, but questions for Tram and other FI guru's is there a "base" start setting for the lean/rich screw adjustment?

Does the slotted screw on the front still have epoxy on it? _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Here is the computer that was loosely laying in the back trunk, I haven't removed the one currently plugged into the car. So I think this is the original to the car since the inspection cover is still attached to it and the other doesn't.

Well, it's been played with, then- looks like it's been adjusted in (rich) likely to compensate for what ultimately wound up being a pump issue would be my guess. We can set it up over here with my exhaust analyzer once the car is running. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
