Hi guys,

I recently got my hands on a very nice squareback in a barn sale. No title like many of these relics tend to be sans. In that I found the VIN but for the life of me I cannot decode to the year and such.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The vin shows 3602209597. Can anyone help me with figuring out more info on the year and other data on the car? Thanks.

You can tell the year and month it was made, that's all. It's not like modern VINs that encode equipment details.

You would be correct, I am certainly new to the SAMBA. I am glad you were able to point out how correct you are. I shall bow to your awesomeness. But seriously not a necessary comment sir.

On the second item I did look there. Thoroughly so I might need to get a helmet. I did not see any that prefixed with 360 so I was a little confused. I did find the following which was most helpful: http://www.hallvw.clara.net/dating.htm

If there are any other rules or faux pas I should adhere to I am happy to accommodate. But rest assure I am fairly new to type 3's and will ask lots of stupid questions. I will go put my helmet on now. Laughing

Have an awesome day folks.

Yes, it's kind of confusing if you are new to things.

The VIN #s from 1965 onward have the model # as the first 2 digits so since it's a Squareback, it starts with 36.

Squareback model = 36

The VIN charts have a default of "31" and this confuses people sometimes.

There is a message at the top of the Type 3 serial number page:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/serialnumberst3.php
that says this but it's easy to miss:
Quote:
Beginning in the 1965 model year (August 1964), the VIN/chassis number begins with the 2-digit model number, i.e. 31 for Fastbacks,
36 for Squarebacks, etc. Refer to Models for the numbers.

Don't be dissuaded by any comments that might sound mean or rude online, it's hard to portray things in text sometimes. People here are happy to help you, feel free to ask any other questions you have about the car.

Thanks dudes. I work in IT so I generally see all types of users. But also try to keep it all in check.

I will get a project thread up soon. Just got the car in my shop and started accessing all the needs. First bill of order is simply to get it running and driving. Then I can address any overly concerning body repairs which there aren't many which is cool. She's got good bones. Laughing

Also double check the pan number (under the rear seat) to see IF it matches with the tag. That way you'll know whether or not the body or pan has been swapped. I only say that, as some states only use the pan number for titling purposes.
