So I have never driven a bus before, but I've always admired them and loved them. I have a 1971 Squareback that I brought back from the dead without any knowledge just the bentley, friends and The Samba. Anyways me and the family were driving and I thought I knew a shortcut but didn't, good thing my wife knew where we were. Anyways I saw a bus and I told my wife I liked it. I walked to the front door to talk to the owner and a big pitbull came from around the house left a note with my number. Two weeks later I decided to stop by and luckily I met the owner, really down to earth mechanic who used to work in a nursery but due to his back pain had to quit and decided to work on cars. I asked about the bus and he had promised it to his brother, we talked about volkswagens for about 2 hours, then he told me to leave him my number he's going to call his brother to pick up the bus if he doesn't want it I get first dibs. A month later no call, I had already bought the bentley manual so decided to go to his house and he said "I've been waiting for you, I lost your number my brother doesn't have time to pick it up he lives out of state, if you want it you can have it for $1500, i just don't have a battery or a key". Of course I said yes and he even offered to tow it home for me. I hope you liked my story and it is truly a "dont' find the car the car will find you" kind of thing. Me and my family love it and can't wait to use it as an adventure vehicle. Sorry the long rant here are the pictures.
ps can you guys tell me when my bay was made and info from the tag? thank you in advance. _________________ '71 VW Bay Window Deluxe Bus [Busness] sold

yeah I know I wasn't supposed to I wanted to see if it would pull that dent, It didn't. Me and the wife started to clean the inside, didn't find the key like I hoped. Found out it was built 07/71 and some rust on the passenger's foot rest and drivers it will need patches.
Here are the pics
I have no experience in welding at all so I'll need to rely on someone nearby. But out of curiosity my neighbor said he can patch up the rust hole with fiberglass is this a good temporary fix?
Removing all the dirt from the bottom could have been approximately 5 lbs of dirt
This is going to be my little thread to what i do to this bay. I'm not a restoration guy by all means but i believe in keeping these classics on the road for as long as possible. Til next time. _________________ '71 VW Bay Window Deluxe Bus [Busness] sold

Total friggin' score! Looks like the original six character license plate, too. California went to yellow on blue plates in 1969 or 1970.
That is a pretty dry, good looking bus. We Californians are pretty spoiled like this. Nice headliner, too. I think that middle seat is from a Vanagon??
The fiberglass repair to the footwell would be a waste of time and money. Replacement panels are available cheaply enough; you don't even have to replace the whole panel if you don't want to.
How's the battery tray look? |

I'll post some pictures I'll be working on the engine bay and dash. Yeah I believe the owner said be got the middle bench from a vanagon. He said he took out the original to haul some cargo and someone took it from the front of his house. _________________ '71 VW Bay Window Deluxe Bus [Busness] sold

Ditto to that! It will look great after a deep cleaning. And congratulations on getting your wife (I presume) to help in scrubbing out the interior. My wife tolerates the buses, but she's not about to get dirty.
I expect this will clean up into a fine bus. Then you will be motivated to go through every damned system on that thing to make sure it runs right. There is so much deferred maintenance, and you can't rely on any of it being done recently. Of course, since you will go through everything, you will know it was done and done right (this is what I keep telling myself)!

Thanks for the info I was wondering I should pull the engine and clean it first before trying to fire it? I don't know if anything got inside the fan years from sitting I don't want to do a mini rebuild only because I'll be moving soon whatwould you do? _________________ '71 VW Bay Window Deluxe Bus [Busness] sold

If it's just to listen for knocks and do a compression assessment there's no need to pull it first, but if you plan on driving further than the end of the driveway with it it's best to pull it out and look under the tins, I always find some issue that makes me say to myself "glad I took the time to do that".
While it's out you can replace the flywheel seal, confirm the Hoover bit and the cooler foam is present, measure the fan width and check the pulley alignment, straighten and clean all the tins, free up the thermostat flaps, ream out the heat risers and replace the manifold boots. It looks fairly original in there but never ever assume some previous mechanic didn't substitute or leave off a critical part because they didn't know any better, all that stuff is a pain to do later unless the engine is out again.
While the engine's out you'll also want to clean out the fuel tank and replace the filler hose as well as the vent lines, and do the ground tab mod on the fuel sender. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

So a little update on the bus. It's parked out on the driveway and afraid I'll get a notice since no tags. Anyways I went to the DMV ready to fork out $671.00, ended up paying $313.00. My wife had to go training for her new job and picked me up a used windshield for $20.00. The one on the car has major water spots. I'll be ordering new seals soon.
My daufgter and I decided to clean the vanagon middle seat for now until I find a good used middle seat. I can't spend much money until I sell the squareback and move closer to work.
Thinking of keeping record of how much I've spent but I'm afraid I'll get in a deep depression when I'm done are yiu guys keeping one or let it go? _________________ '71 VW Bay Window Deluxe Bus [Busness] sold
