Any difference on early 55(April) tranny shock mounts. Straight or curved?
Just spoke with the Rancho guys and they said there are two styles.
Thanks |

... tell ya what I do, to understand something... Google, Bughaus.com. Once there, click on "Bug", then "transmission"... saw 2 early-listings there - 1946 to 9/1952 (KDF dash split) part number 211 301 297 and a picture... ... and 10/1952 (start at Zwitter) to 1959 211 301 265A and a picture.
Bughaus is 99% right-on... I trust them whole heartedly. Based in this info, there is only one application. Then, I usually order it.
Good luck. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

I believe the angled (curved arm) shock mounts started in 1960. The axle tube shock mount should match the body mount, strait to strait and angled to angled. There are not a lot of Bugs I see with the angled mount and no cast in bump stop. I have an unloved 1960 Bug splitcase box in my garage and its tubes have the angled mounts. _________________

... man, did I read that wrong... sorry.
There was only one rear shock offered in 1955. In fact the shock for 10/52 with the intro of the Zwitter was the same in the rear... part number 113 513 031... looks strait to me. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

I believe knaggy is asking about the bearing housing which is a cast piece that includes the lower shock absorber mount.
I have straight ones on my 57, but that was a choice I made when I had my current split case transaxle built. My choice was based mostly on my recollection of what was in there 40 years ago before I had switched to a full syncro.
I think EVfun is close to the right answer with 1960 or perhaps 1961 with the full syncro. |

My '57 Bug has strait shock mounts on the frame but angled shock mounts on the bottom because it is running a 1962 transaxle. You can mix the two types.
He Snort, I see you are in the Seattle area. Where did you get your original type transaxle built? After 55 years my 2nd gear syncro is a bit worn. The previous owner had serviced the box so the oil was very clean, so I pumped a quart out and added a quart of MTL. It works great when warm, but can still "grunk" a bit going into 2nd when cold if I shift too fast. I am am seriously considering back to stock as I still have the original engine and brakes. I miss the 1st gear whine my first Bug had. _________________

^^^ I worked with Gary at Gary's Transaxles in Kent. He's a one man operation with an obsession. I saw him a few months ago and he had some good things to say about the availability of some new parts for split case that were not available previously so this might be a good time for you to look into it. Call him and ask to stop by for a chat, he's very open to working with people that have specific needs and you'll enjoy the time spent with him.
edit: I feel your first gear noise pain, once you've driven a straight cut first gear, it sticks with you and the full syncro helical cut gears leave you wanting. |
