I have a 63 ragtop. I recently rebuilt a 73 DP for it. I installed a 66 bus flywheel so I would not have to grind the tranny housing. Given these 2 factors which clutch assembly should I buy? There was no clutch assembly when I got the engine.
Thanks Geoff _________________ 1963 Ragtop |

Measure the "gap" of the flywheel where your clutch would sit. It will be either 180mm or 200mm, that will drive your decision. You'll need a pressure plate with a center ring for a 1963 transmission. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. If my memory serves me right a 66 T2 flywheel would be a 200mm with the 6V ring gear or if a late yr 200mm 12V ring gear.(been there and seen it)
Crank bull nose will also determine which flywheel was used. (been there also)
Either way the trans bell housing will need a clearance at the three points. (done my share of those also as a engine builder) |

NO grinding of the bell-housing is necessary if the flywheel has a 6-volt "ring gear". Think about it! _________________ Jesucristo es mi Seņor y Salvador! |

SORRY but your WRONG..
A stock 63 tranny used a 6V 180mm flywheel while any 200mm will NOT fit un less the bell housing is clearanced.
OP is installing a later DP engine with a potential 6V 200mm flywheel for his 6V starter but bottom line is the outside dia of the 200mm flywheel will NOT clear w/o some grinding away.
I did many of those decades ago when I first started building engines in the late 1960's.
It is possible that someone installed a 67 swing axle tranny that did not need any clearing.....those things do come up every so often.
EDIT: 6V or 12V determine the number of teeth. 6V 180mm was a solid flywheel while the 6V/12V 200mm flywheel had a replaceable ring gear. |

Nobody cares who is right or wrong. Reread what he said, he installed a 6 volt200 mm bus flywheel and its o ringed. He wants to know which pressure plate to use. You will use the earlier type 200 mm with center collar it's 67-70 for bug. Good luck. Cutting the bell housing is no big deal but to each his own. 6 v 200 mm flywheels are getting harder to find. |

6V 200mm flywheel does not need to clearance the bellhousing. They are the same diameter as a 6V 180mm clutch flywheel. If they weren't the teeth on the starter would not engage properly. I have 2 of these flywheels and have never needed to clearance a bellhousing to use them.
