After 4+ years of amazing service (15k roadtrip miles, 120+ days on the road and 3 countries) my $275 scratch and dent Edgestar gave up during a 100* camping weekend at Mogfest.

I've been searching for anything better than the owners manual to troubleshoot with to no avail.

Does anyone have the wiring schematic or flowchart for this thing?

My Display works and temp reading is accurate, when powering up the fan will run for a brief period and then nothing.

It was running perfect for 3 days and then simply stopped cooling.

12v and 120v are the same. Since it died I have not been able to get the compressor to engage.

Any Hints?

Thanks!

My 65 quart pooped the bed last year and there are no new parts being manufactured for older models.

I think your transformer is shot?

I think if the transformer was out it qould only work on 12v.
My display and fan work, but the compressor never kicks on.

This Transformer turns 110 into 12 volt even if your gauge and power button work they are separate components. The Transformer turns the compressor on. Yours is doing exactly what mine does the compressor does not engage,

I didn't watch the linked video (limited bandwidth here)
but how hard would it be to measure output of transformer?

If fridge doesn't work on 110VAC or 12 Volts, maybe this part is fried?

The way I see it you have 2 possible problems. One is that your compressor has bit the dust. It is likely a sealed unit, and is not serviceable.

The other is that your control unit or driver circuitry is broken/failed.

If possible, can you get a VOM on the compressor power wires? They should be fairly obvious. If it doesn't have power, you need to investigate the control unit.

If this unit uses a danfoss/secop compressor, there will be a compressor control unit (square plastic box) mounted to the side of the compressor. This unit will power the compressor with 2 wires connected to terminals on the compressor body. This control unit is separate from the thermostat and buttons you would use to set the fridges temp.

Here is some videos on repairing the fridge. The compressors are usually robust, so the power supply and control unit are the primary suspects.

I can get some volt readings, I was hoping there was a schematic or diagram to help speed things up.

I'll likely check it out tonight and post back with any findings.

$188 for a controller, thats more than half what I paid for the whole fridge...

You might try contacting their warranty service. Even if its out of warranty, they might be able to provide some repair documentation. Sometimes there will be a schematic mounted in the compressor compartment, taped to a panel or something?

Which is why those of us who loathe that paradigm have had to learn to hack into all of the stuff we want to keep working!

So, I went to check it out today and when I plugged it in, The compressor kicked in and it started cooling!

Whoopee!

Nope... To soon. Only ran about 5 minutes then cut out, the fan comes on for a couple seconds every 2 minutes or so but the compressor is quiet.

Turns out there is a very rudamentary diagram on the back of the fridge.

I pulled everything apart, Opened the Compressor controller and everything seems to be intact, no evidence of things burning up.

I tried Jumping power from a 12v cordless tool battery to the compressor with almost no luck. It wimpered a bit but nothing happened. It has a three wire connector, I think it's Ground, Run and Start. I believe they're all DC, but unsure as to what voltake should be there.

I tried hooking everything back up except the Compressor and looking for voltage at the connector for the compressor, but only saw a very brief 5v-ish spike for a moment a couple seconds after energizing the system. A DMM isn't the best for watching voltage change, and I don't have an analog model or a scope.

At this point I can't say for sure if it's the compressor or controller. If I could make the compressor turn I'd just buy a controller and give it a shot. I found one for $144 on Living Direct.

Have you plugged it into 120v and also tried eliminating the 12v cig lighter male end? I have fixed 2 folks edgestars by eliminating the end and wiring direct to a fused 12v source.

You can check your compressor with your ohm meter as shown in the link below. I think it will only tell you if the motor windings are in spec. But it is a good place to start.

Based on the rough schematics above with the U/V/W markings, this is a 3-phase AC motor. See http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/195185

When I was googling for the diagram, got a lot of hits at expeditionportal

I read thru about half that the other day, I like the holddown and baffling for the condenser.

I keep meaning to add an interior light and something to hold the lid open to mine.

Thats a handy explanation, Thanks!

I have already checked resistance, I know at least 2 legs measured out to 1.5 Ohms, maybe all of them. I can recheck to verify now that I know they should all be equal. All of them were insulated from ground.

Already wired direct, no cig adapter.

Behavior is the same on AC as DC.
