Hi all.

Anyone else have new drums rub on new backing plates?

Someone else online caught this detail but my initial observation was that
my new Zimmerman brake drums damaged the new OEM type (or OEM?) plug at lining inspection hole on backing plate.

Drums: new Zimmerman
Backing plate: NOS (factory?)

This happened at each wheel. I'll measure the new drums against a couple
pairs of used drums.

In part, I want to determine if the issue is due to my work or that some
drums are not within spec.
(though I can't really see how I could've f'd up the backing plate install in
terms of positioning. In/out play at each wheel is very minor)

Neil.

I did paint the backside of each plate. A few coats of spray paint.

<<<my new Zimmerman brake drums damaged the new OEM type (or OEM ? )plug at lining inspection hole on backing plate.>>>

Which is it?
OE or OEM ?

<<Drums: new Zimmerman

OE if they are from VW direct, but I don't think you got them there so they are OEM and don't fit right.
Or is it the drums?

You're right there -- what is hitting what?

Ya. I hear ya.

Well..... Measured new drum against old. Saw 0.5 mm difference, if that, measuring from inside face where it meets axle flange, to outer lip.

Ok. Terms. I'm assuming the backing plate I got from vancafe is NOS. but who knows? The plastic plugs, ya, again who knows.

I'm not going to worry about it. The passenger side drum does not appear to be rubbing on the plate itself.

I had bigger fish to fry with shoes that barely allowed for the 1.5 mm gap specified by Bentley. But that's another story.

I'd think that the edge of the drum is too deep.
Nothing that a waffle grinding pad wouldn't knock off with a fast pass around the circumference of the edge of the drum.

Who's Zimmermann?

I considered doing just that; removing material but it seems ok.

Zimmermann? Isn't he a musician? Or am I thinking of a zither?
Ya. Zither. That's it.

I am truly stunned that that question is coming from you.

I blow off Otto--& Deutschland for brake parts.

And belly up to the counter & play Wagner---

Support our own economy--
I am shocked as well as appalled that you don't Kam.

Wow. A) Making a serious assumption, if not accusation; B) I just bought 3 USA-made products the other day, albeit not car parts; C) even Wagner has brake components made overseas; D) you, yourself, supply foreign-made parts for these German-made vehicles... so, in the words of Shawn and Gus, suck it. :fist:

I was merely pointing out my surprise (and the irony) that an automotive know-it-all has never heard of a well-known brake manufacturer. Rolling Eyes

Way back when when I was young &
dumb, I went out with a Kraut babe, she used to give me the high sign once inawhile as notated, with a roll of here tongue in broken english mentioned "Rotate"
Ditto.

I only drop for Made In USA brake parts thank you, and another; Rotate!

The only foreign brake parts that I use are Limey brake shoe linings for my English scooters, which I get direct from the Motherland.
They fit /work the best.

I prefer Wagner brakes & hardware for everything else, don't even have one iota of interest in the ; who knows, who cares, brake parts.

Forget Otto.
