Calexican - Thanks for pointing that out. I have been searching for that very solution for a couple of days now but have unable to find anything so far.
Please help if anyone knows anything about bolting the side trim on.
Thanks in advance. _________________ 1958 coupe |

Did you put the worn check rod bolt back on the Ghia? It looks really worn and the door would stay open better with a new one.
Here is a reproduction bolt next to a used one so you can see the difference:
If you need a set of new bolts John Copello should have them and if not I think I still have a set available.
Keep up the great work! Your Ghia is looking fantastic! |

The above observation is valid. Thanks.
Anyway. Today’s lesson. Never make an assumption.
I assumed fitting twin carbs meant you had to live without the deck lid springs and engineer some sort of gas ram fix, or use a broom handle to prop the lid up when needed.
My last Ghia had twin 40’s. I fitted them, removed the deck lid springs. Lived with the annoyance of propping up the lid every time I wanted to access the engine bay etc. I even sold the car without the springs.....
Then I read on here recently (thanks again thesamba peeps) that they may fit, just try them. So I did. And guess what? They fit and the springs don’t foul the carbs!
They do get really close halfway through the opening movement, perhaps about 10mm.
But a miss is as good as a mile. This is on the lowest, least springy setting. I did try them on the next holes up first of all but wasn’t necessary.
Today I started to install my headlining.
Thanks for looking. _________________ 1958 coupe |

From months of waiting now have far too much to think about.
Broke open my interior kit from the Aussie trimmer as I remembered the dash grab Handel has a cover to sew(!) in place.
Nice instructions, but looks like a fiddly job.
Just need a needle.
Thanks for looking. _________________ 1958 coupe |

Just a note, from a train spotter, the A pillar has the short headliner and not down to the dash. But your car - for info. _________________ -------------------

Well I never....
Mine is an off white perforated vinyl a bit like the photo there. TMI I believe from my local vw supplier. A Heritage agent I think.
Thanks for the quick response.

When the dash pad was introduced , the headliner was brought further down the A pillar to finish at the dash pad- approx. Jan 59.

So, my next job is to unglue 1 A pillar trim. But at least it saves me doing the other side. _________________ 1958 coupe |

The dash pad came on-line on January 26, 1959 production (chassis 2257235). The first version did not have trim for the defroster vents or the lower edge.
The second version (with trims) came on July 6, 1959 (chassis 2490635). so very close to the end of the lowlight period (chassis 2528668) |
Just taken a picture of my April '58 with original headliner...

Thanks guys. Great reference.
Look what arrived today from the USA.
Cost more in postage than the purchase. Plus £13 duty and other fees.
Now I can finish off fitting the side trim. _________________ 1958 coupe |

Headliner on hold as I forgot to lay an interior light wire so until some arrives moved onto shiney stuff. Today’s advance.
