Hey just in case you are still thinking about IRS bolt lockers I made a pretty sweet version of that bolt-and-tab kit that you definitely have the skills to replicate or outdo me. Those welds look good.
I took a 17mm Allen key and cut it up and made those tabs, so not only is it stouter in general, you can get a spanner on the hex part to bump them into alignment.

I bought a set from Kar Tek that tobiism suggested. Those are some nice ones you built yourself !! I like how you have them mounted nicely up out of the way. I'll be sure to mount mine like that. _________________ My Build: '69 Baja - Dark Earth Version

Not quite an update, more like "what I did to the baja today".
I bought new reproduction backing plates for the front.
I bought an M10 x 1.5 tap to chase the mounting holes in the spindle.
I bought M10 x 1.5 x 25 mm bolts and hardened washers.
I installed the backing plate and torqued the bolts to 36 ft/lbs.
Although a baby step, it's one more bite out of the elephant. _________________ My Build: '69 Baja - Dark Earth Version

Unfortunately, just ignoring a problem won't make it go away. The final rust spot (that I'm aware of) is on the passenger side wheel well.
I actually found this rust quite a while ago when I was sanding the paint off the interior.
I sanded the rust away to see how much good metal was left.
I believe the culprit of this rust issue is dirt and debri accumulated in the area behind the lower door hinge. The rubber seal between the body and hood is missing allowing water to drain right into that area. The water is soaked up like a sponge and just works its magic on the metal. It did take 49 years to get this way though.

After cutting some metal away, I found rusty dirt that was packed against the wheelwell.
A cleared the dirt out using a screwdriver and a pick.
I opened up a couple more rust holes while poking around with the screwdriver and pick ...
... and a few more as I cleaned up the heater channel for welding.
I cut a piece of sheetmetal, bent it , drilled a hole, and slid some tie wire through it with a knot on the end.
That allowed me to fish the piece through the large hole on the bottom and pull it up into place.
Then it was just a matter of piling some tacks up.
I used this method a few more times then sanded everything down fairly smooth.
I made a patch out of sheet metal and welded it in place. I sanded it down fairly smooth.
That leaves the inside left to finish.
I used poster board to make templates to cut sheetmetal to weld in place.
I put patches behind the door pillar holes, welded them up, and sanded them down.
Since some of the repairs will be hidden under carpet, I didn't go crazy sanding them down.
At last ... I think I'm done welding tin foil. _________________ My Build: '69 Baja - Dark Earth Version

Awhile ago I decided to sand the paint off the interior so I could paint it the color I want.
One of the previous owners made vertical cuts in the radio opening.
I straightened the metal the best I could, welded up the cuts, applied some body filler and sanded it fairly smooth.
I bough some self etching primer.
I primed the dash area.
I'll prime the rest of the interior a section at a time. _________________ My Build: '69 Baja - Dark Earth Version

I don't have much of an update as I'm still working on painting the interior. I decided to paint the door jambs the same color as the interior. Since I'm painting the door jambs, I probably should sand and primer the exterior quarter panels also. Talk about the snow ball effect.

In this episode of "As the paint dries" ...
I bought some primer that's lighter than the self etching primer I applied before. The lighter color helps me see areas I miss.
Here's the rear window and roof side rails.
Rattle can painting takes a lot longer, but I'll get there sooner or later during these dog days of summer. _________________ My Build: '69 Baja - Dark Earth Version

Well, I finally got a coat of paint on the dash .
Seeing pictures of dustymojave's baja, mr bill's class 11, and Outatime's baja helped me decide the color.
I'm nowhere near done rattle can painting, but I'm getting closer every day. _________________ My Build: '69 Baja - Dark Earth Version

In that photo, yours looks a lot like the pale gray in my Baja. Mine was supposed to be closer to battleship gray and I had the paint custom mixed by an auto paint supply. Then the project got pushed aside for a while, and when I came back to it and finally sprayed the paint, it was WAAYYY lighter than intended. The guy at the shop said "It will darken as it cures." It actually got lighter as it cured. But by the time I was done spraying it, I had grown to like it. I couldn't exactly take the paint back either. So it stayed. I still like a medium gray for a Baja Bug. Maybe next paint job on it. It's been 10 years now. _________________ Richard

Ha ha, all this time I thought your car was white inside and out.
I'm using this white paint for the interior.
I still need to paint under the dash, the front firewall, the front wheel wells, and the heater channels. _________________ My Build: '69 Baja - Dark Earth Version

Most people, even in person, think it's white. Until you park it next to something that IS white. THEN it really stands out as NOT being white.
For the roll cage and bumpers in mine I used Rustoleum Sail Blue. Bought it in quart cans from the local hardware store. Shot it with my Harbor Freight touch-up gun. Mixed the paint 1:1 with mineral spirits thinner. Sprayed beautifully and cured nicely too. It actually cured about 2x as fast as out of the spray can and with a very high gloss too. Lots better flow, self leveling, and less orange peel. Better run resistance too. Spray can touch ups tend to have runs and orange peel though. _________________ Richard
