I think the starter has gone out in my rail. It's a Type 1 trany with a Ford 2.8 engine on it. I guess it's been working kind of hard to get it started being a bigger engine. The one that's in it now is a Standard trany starter but I seem to remember somebody here saying that the automatic starter will fit just as easily and not require the front bushing. Is that true?

Yes the BOSCH SR17 Auto Trans starter is self supported and shaft does not even extend to where it needs a bushing at bell housing.... It is also a little bit stronger than standard starter and should spin up motor easier...
