Just got this notice from the Wet Westies.

Kirk from @northwesty had his Red Syncro 16 stolen last night in Renton Washington. Please Repost this photo and keep an eye out for it. Hopefully it'll be found unharmed soon!

Does anyone know how these PNW vans are being broken in to?

Are windows being broken or are the thieves more skilled?

There's a video of the theft. He just picks the lock.

Edit - added link to video of theft

Once he got entry what did he do to start it and defeat the steering wheel lock?

Dang. So glad it was recovered! Kirk provides great support to the Vanagon community here in the PNW.

It appears that it was stolen out of the parking area in front of his Northwesty shop (I'm not 100% certain though).

I gotta get serious about installing a gps tracker...

Just remember, thieves read the Samba too. Don't post pictures and how to's on your security measures.

Didn't take very long to gain entry.
I will put this scumbag in the skilled category.

Idle time + a curious mind + motivation + a bit of practice...

Even a scumbag can learn skills.

I do wonder about motivation. We're these guys looking for a van to transport stolen goods (not uncommon), looking to steal a radio, or looking to steal an unusual Vanagon to chop, sell? Are they local and had been casing Kirk's place or did they happen to drive by?

No clue what they are thinking Question
Here in NY, they would catch a bullet for being on private property with motives such as these.

That's a good question. Is it the inherent coolness of these? Doesn't that make it harder to dump if there is a BOLO out for a distinctive rig? I get why Accords are boosted (happened to me): it's easy and there is a market for the parts. But the Vanagon community seems tight enough that a newly parted out Syncro would attract attention.

I have too many mornings where I walk down to my secluded parking area and breathe a sigh of relief to see my rig still there.

The guy picked the lock and then found Kirks spare key when he went the camping stuff. That is how he started the van. He tore apart the dash to steal the gauges and stereo. In the process, through dumb luck, he found and disable the GPS tracker. Apparently the kill switch had not be engaged.

From the updated IG post it sounds like it had a GPS tracker, and they found it... Sad

Glad to hear it came back, even if they did f&$k up the dash and thrash the inside... could have been much worse.

Good reminder to all that your rig isn't safe unless you make it safe, and even then, keep your head on a swivel.

Looks like he had a pocket full of keys, keep trying till you find one that works.

I know a lot of our vans have worn out tumblers in the door locks and ignition. Look at your keys, you know who you are.

I feel bad for Kirk, and glad he got it back pretty quick.
