YES!!!! it is the nicest probably and most original anywhere on the planet. Three weeks ago I had the chance at a 1965 356 SC Porsche with 147 miles on it for $400,000....what does this tell me....both are greatly overpriced and trolling for a fool.....thank you Barrett Jackson!! |

You almost wonder if it's a miss print listing it for $1million. I could see $100k to the right, deep pocketed person. Maybe he's hoping someone at VW will see it and HAVE TO HAVE IT for their museum. Really, that's where it belongs. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

That’s exactly where it belongs, because if you drive it, it’ll eventually be worthless for the most part. I’d love to have that exact car, especially with the correct 1964 only red cord seat covers, but it just wouldn’t make sense for the average person to own that car. You almost NEVER see 64’s with the original seat covers. |

You'd think an astute seller would have the foresight to contact VW directly and negotiate an exorbitant sale price before offering it to the public and picking this round number out of the sky. In the end, he/she will likely end up looking like so many other Samba sellers who suddenly realize the price needs to come down, and putting "REDUCED" in the ad at some point. |

He's on a fishing expedition. I don't blame him. He "may" get some emails asking what it would take in reality to own the car.
There's lot's of rich folks who view $100,000 like we view $1000.. Jerry Seinfeld is one of them w/his deep pockets.
To me, that bug deserves to be displayed where everyone can see it and soak in the "wow" factor of a brand new 54 year old VW. If someone purchased it and drove it, that would be a big shame.
I just hope some rich enthusiast doesn't buy it as a centerpiece for his man cave car collection and no one else can see it. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Agree on the $100K, I could see someone doing that for something so insanely original.
I think that's insane too though _________________ How to Post Photos

This picture confirms for me something many of you probably already knew: that VW didn't put a ton of effort into the paint line between the wheel disc and hoop. They probably dropped a plastic or cardboard disc over the rim and sprayed the inner section. When I picked up my (mostly) original paint '65, with OE paint wheels, I noticed that too, and was surprised. Surprised because it was my first set of unmolested wheels and I'd only ever seen "over-restored" examples before this. A pic of my spare is here https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1828172.jpg
I wonder if my spare tire is original |

I'll bet this "nephew" who inherited this VW is not a car guy, but a "money" guy. This post is over 2 years old and who knows how many times it has been offered for sale....I know of at least one time myself. Again this is not to disparage the vehicle at all but for me in almost 50 years of VW "and keeping up" this is the MOST crazy and uninformed price I have ever seen. |

Thanks for pointing out that detail (flaw). Now I don't want it. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

In the 90's there was a black '67 that had only a couple of thousand miles that similarly turned up in Atlanta. I heard about it at a couple of Vintage VW club meetings.
One day I was at a VW show and happened on a black '67. I started looking it over and commented on what an excellent restoration it was. I quickly figured out that this was the car that I had heard about.
The best restoration will never match an original car. I remember the fit and finish of the window rubber and moldings on that car was way better than any repro rubber I had ever seen. The quality of workmanship on all details was excellent. The paint was great but didn't look like it belonged on a Ferrari. Every restored car either has parts that don't match the original quality or paint that is way better than anything that came from the factory.
I hope this car can be photographed from top to bottom so all of the little details can be documented. |
Back in the 80's and early 90's I used to attend the VW Classic Show down in Irvine CA. The was a collector from Arizona that trucked in his cars. Most of them had less than 1000 original miles. He had a Ruby Red Bug with 495 original miles I think. I thought I would never see anything with lower miles.
This car is truly the Holy Grail of original VW's. Unbelievable! |
I was at our local coffee house Saturday car gathering this morning. I was talking to the collector you are talking about. I see him just about every Saturday. FYI, the large VW collection that he had is all gone. He is now into 30's and 40' mainly Fords....Hot rods and stock |
was that the ceiling fan guy? |
No, the ceiling fan guy was Burton Burton and at the time he lived in Ca. he's the guy with the Funicular going up to his house. |
