Does anybody know whether a 1976 Westfalia should have the fringe on the camper top? Thanks, Jeff

Possible. But not typical. This is from a random late bay manual. Not sure of year. But late bay none the less. I've only seen it once on a late bay.

My '75 had the fringe. I've never noticed it on later Bays ('76-'79), but I've never really thought to look for it either... |

My 74 had it, my 78 does not. I have one and had thought about adding it to my 78, but am just holding onto it for now. _________________ 1978 Sage Green P22 Westfalia

74-75 only as far as I've heard. My 74 has it. I assume it's purely decorative but also wonder if it's supposed to serve some function such as reducing wind noise if pop top seals are leaky. |

I wonder if there are any "fringe benefits", for having fringe ?
seems to be a mystery...but it's cool; the fringe. I know early bay Westfalias came equipped, as did my '70. |

Thanks for all the replies. My 1976 still had the original tent until it was replaced last year. There wasn't any fringe on it at that time, but I got to thinking it could have been removed by the prior owner if it was in bad shape etc. I wish I had thought of this when replacing that original tent as I would have examined it for clues.

I always thought they drew their inspiration from certain hairstyle...I remember my mum used to call it a "fringe" too.

My '69 had it and I replaced it when I installed a replacement tent....I like it, it is sort of like the bud vases in early bugs. You don't need it but it's quirky enough to be cool, so you have to have it........To be cool. And who doesn't want to be cool? My 69 had it, I haven't replaced it yet. I was under the impression it acted as a drip edge so when it rains the water drips down instead of getting on the canvas. _________________ '69 Westfalia Camper~Cassidy

A fantastic finishing touch to either your restored pop top or freshly finished canvas. This cotton fringe material was fitted as original fitment to 68>72 pop top roofs to hide the unsightly join of canvas to roof. This really does reinstate that original look.

It hardly rains where I'm at, so that that would be a non-starter. I think it was put on there as a soup strainer or a make work project the task master Germans thought of......I found the fringe I used at a fabric store. _________________ '69 Karmy, '69 Camper, Meyers clone, '65 drag bug, 10.78 @ 128 (sold it) '51 Dodge farm truck,

interesting link tcash
my 68 does NOT have the fringe. While it's not in good shape anymore, I think it is the original top still. I'm the second owner and didn't get the impression the family I bought it form did much to it. _________________ ~Kevin

My 76 appears to have never had fringe.
I sure dig the green canvas on that westy though! I haven't seen one that color before! _________________ '76 Deluxe Campmobile |

For those that have replaced the fringe, how does it attach? We tried some 8mm and 10MM pneumatic staples and the staples would not penetrate the roof brace on the front side.
