I transfer the oil from the 5qt to a 1qt and pour away. It does help that I have a custom oil filler for this reason and also for increased venting.

How do y'all do it? I get oil in the 5qt jugs, but even using a 1qt bottle makes a mess most of the time.

Does everyone just clean up and live with the mess? Use that special twist on/off cap from FLAPS? A certain kind of funnel? What's the trick?? I hate dribbling oil all over my tins and heat riser cuz it NEVER comes off all the way.

I never had much luck putting anti-freeze in my bus also.

It's my summer oil/coolant blend, helps the engine run cooler when it's hot outside

Use a funnel and tip the bottle sideways - really not that challenging

Yeah, just joshing.. I was working on my VW waterpumper and thought it might make a few folks smile, haha.
I like your breather deal, how and why did you make it?

Steve, I never thought about those shop towels getting ingested into the fan.. thanks for the tip. I'll move them to their own storage spot a-la-Batan.

My 1970 bus has an oversize hatch cut into the parcel tray that opens to the engine compartment in my bus (PO enhancement). Really great for working on the engine.

If my bus did not have it, my gut would be to drill a 3/4" hole in the rear parcel tray immediately above where the oil filler would be, and use a funnel attached to a hose. A screw and a couple of big fender washers and a wing nut could seal it.

Yes, I know I'm shocking many. But it really depends on what the general condition of the bus really is. My bus has shaved rain gutters so I'm not concerned with being a purist. Reliable smiles-per-mile is my goal.

But, if your bus is pristine, I would not cut a hole anywhere.

Try a turkey baster and a lot of patience!

Just searched the Gallery for it, you mean something like this then? The "About Time Inc" oil filler adapter?

Then there's those angled aftermarket chrome or billet fillers that go in place of the stock one.

I saw some insane looking tall one recently online somewhere..... yeah just found it it again:

You know the correct way to hold the oil bottle when pouring, right? Laughing

They don't show the sideways-tilt-and-pray method, which is all my bus has room for Laughing

That last modded oil filler is great! I'm going to make something similar.

They sell a hand pump which threads into a 5 quart oil bottle. I found mine at a industrial truck/tractor supply store. I think it is normally used for gear oil. It was 6 dollars and came with 3 feet of clear plastic tubing. It meters the oil out evenly with each pump and zero mess.... Easy peezy.

The problem I face is similar to your scrivy, even though I have a 74 Type 2. This is what I have to work with...

On my last oil change, I had to wash out the engine with simple green because I got oil everywhere.

I don't know why I didn't think about that! I have one on my gear oil bottle from servicing the transmission last year. Thanks!

I also always use an old T-shirt, towel, or any rag, and use it to drape over the engine and around the filler neck. Any spills get caught by the rag. Works great. I use a really old grimy rag, and throw it out, since there is little point in washing a rag with oil in it.

Forgot about that. Would be ok for topping off the oil. But 128 pumps for an oil change.

There are transfer pumps for 5 gallon buckets.
https://www.google.com/search?q=5+gallon+oil+hand+...CVoQsAQIYQ

I used to pour into one of these and then transfer.
