In Dirty spring packs...
All Washed up.
Out comes the clean spring packs.
So I am having problem getting the spring packs in the front beam. I will have to see what its going on. I used small zip ties along with small hammer and they are still not going in. I am going to bevel down the ends the next time I try. I might also put a thin layer of grease to keep them together and stop from sliding around. That is about what I have going on today. Prob start the bug up tomorrow , its been a while.

Well I made a mistake.. I also figured out why the spring pack would not go in the correct way..
You can prob figure out what happened but I put the inside adjusters in backwards. :/
Porta band and flip them back and weld one side up again. So make sure you put them in the correct way before you weld them up. lol
Finally learned this one off Samba..
electric tape on the drill bit.
Just don't get too carried away and go slow.
I then pull them out and drill the rest on the drill press.
I had to grind a drill bit down for the angel for the set screw. Its pretty close but should be fine.
I cleaned up everything and the bottom and top adjuster worked fine and smooth. I put a tack in a few places and I think it grounded out though the inside and arced. So make sure you have a good ground before you weld or tack. Its moving but tight. I hope I can free it up because if I can't .. cut it apart again.. I am off work for a week or so. Its prob best to take a break for now.

Well got a little bit of time to work some more. Shock towers relocation. The last beam I did after the pie cut the arms rubbed on the air shock and had to clearance the arms about 1/4 inch. Also after the 3/4 pie cut to the pan head it was really slow to raise at first. I am thinking it was the angle of the shocks. My thought was to move them back 2" and see how that works.
Mark with the trusty sharpie.
Cut with the portaband.
Measured back 2" with some 10ga.
Put some gussets in and weld on both sides.
Clean it up.
Little blurry sorry bout that.
Round out the edges and I think I am good.
If this does not work too well I will just cut it off and figure something else out.
I only did one side to see how much clearance I am going to have with the 17s. I think I should be good though. Will try to fit up next week after the shoreline show in Seattle this weekend. Might also come home with some goodies but really need to buy some more parts for the front end and finish it up. This is the last VW show thats on a Sat that I can go to. All for now..

So finally got some time to drop the front beam.
I don't know if this is going to work out might have to make new towers and weld new ones on. So used the Dewalt and cut some slices.
My first cuts. I did not have to do this on my 69 because I just cut the body out. The front was smashed so I did not care. This time I do so will have to see how much I will have to cut out.
So far this is the result and I don't think I like how much material is missing.
It prob would not have been too bad with 3" but I ended up with 3 5/8s. I can prob use some 10 ga or 3/16 and fill that gap in. Have to see how it looks after I am done.
This guy tried to sneak up on me.
needless to say he died, death by pickle fork.
Back on topic. Its in one of many times.
This is the drivers side.
and the Pass side.
Its looking like its pretty slim on the the outside shock tower.
Measured from the pan head on both sides.
6 1/2 on both sides I am excited about that.
This is the final cut I ended up with.
Looks like I have plenty of clearance on the pass side. The drivers side does not look like much its about the same as the pass side. I will prob take it back to work and weld in the material and see how it looks and do a fit up again after I am done. All for now.

So I am back at work again vacation is over and want to finish my front end soon. I tried to make the cuts as even as possible, but lets face it this front end is not the best so here it goes.
I also cut some more 10ga strips and tacked them in place.
I figured it would be a good idea to brace the top inc case it wanted to pull in.
I will be working on it more the next couple of days.

Got some more done, not the best but its progress.
I used 10ga so it double the thickness of the shock tower sheet metal. I think its 16ga and its pretty thin.
Again not the best but I gaped it so I could smooth out all the welds.
I have done better in my days and its hard to cram in welds with 15 min to do it in.
I also realized when I was welding and cooling the beam off that If I do a pie cut on the frame head I will have to redo this beam.

| What welder do you have? Im thinking of pie cutting my 67 and I'm not sure if my harbor freight welder is going to work... |

I think it's 460 3 phase 90 or 100% duty cycle. I am using my works welder. If your going to pie cut you can do it with a good 220 welder. Not the cheap ones. It easy to cut but more work to get it right. Most weld a 2 or 3" strap over the weld pass for extra strength. If you go through my old thread of my pile , lots of info. It's about all I know. If you want to lay the apron it's the only way to go. The apron will hit before the beam will . Also I don't think you can run shocks unless you have a beam set up for that. I also have a formal for how much raise you will get with the pie cut size on Google docs.

Well I thought I took a pic of the cleaned up welds but I will do that tomorrow. So you get to see them in all their glory. lol
So I figured I would redo the rib that I cut out and it seems to look like it will work out.
I did a lot of clean up after this picture but I hope I don't have to do any alterations after I fit up over the weekend.
I also started on the other shock mount and should finish that up tomorrow.

Well I think I am done for now.
Cleaned it up the welds.
Worked on and finished the passenger shock tower.
When I pulled the bar off the top it only move in 1/16 I am glad of that. I thought it would have moved more but I was really careful to let it cool down before welding on the same side. I also added the rib back in on the front.
Cleaned up the passenger side shock tower, they are not perfect but are pretty close. I think I am pretty happy with how it turned out.
Finally its in and clears. That Black sharpie mark on the left side is where its pretty close. I will take a ball pin hammer and make little more room. It has about an 1/8 but I would like about a 1/4 there.
I looked to see how much room I would have if I pie cut the frame head. I would prob have to take another inch off the front of the beam to make sure it cleared. I will save that for another day.
Next: Place order for more parts..!!
Oh also here is the current clearance on the inside. I would prob have to take another inch or two down which would be pretty hard to do if I do a pie cut.

Turned a lot of these piles:
Picture big pile of scrap and 5 old BBQ (must of had to have some sort of vw part in order not to get my pic pulled.
into: Dropped spindles, Brake shoes, wheel cylinders, inner barings, seals and New lugs for all 4 wheels!
Might be a while before the next order but getting closer.
Next on the list:
drum spacers for the long axles
rear brake shoes
rear brake hoses
rear brake cylinders
master cylinder
reservoir
Trying to figure out if I want to power coat the backing plates and the spindles or just paint them.

I have been busy with the family and all but still got a little bit done.

I ran into one problem my sprung star adjuster tab should look like this.
But It got ripped off from the wire wheel. It must not have been much left so I will have to order one and put it on before they get powder coated.
From what I have read there are two ways and welding is not an option because its sprung steel.. Drill and tap with a screw or peen them back in.
More to come when I actually get the part with my next order which might be a while.

So I figured I would clean up my drums. also if you notice I have a earlier rear drum. I will have to find another one but it has one of the threads half way pulled out. I cleaned it up anyways.
Not a good pic but they cleaned up pretty good with an assortment of wire wheels.
This is great stuff to clean up the drums after just before the clean up. I applied it twice before paint and used paper towels.
Turned out better than expected, as I used krylon industrial gloss black.
It shines pretty good. I will prob paint my front beam with this stuff.
The only things I am going to powder coat the backing plates and dropped spindles.
The finished drums. You can see the popped out threads on the upper left drum. That one did not take long to clean up so its not a big deal. I will have to find one before its road worthy. I don't want one of the 17" falling off on the road.
I think I am pretty happy with the turn out. I would suggest doing it and curious how well the paint holds up. Almost half way to placing my next order of parts. All for now.....
