Fender bolt holes are super close now.
Tacked in place with my spot welder and sheet metal screws holding the bottom in for now. You might be asking yourself why am I re using this apron? Well, I was totally expecting worse with removing this one. Upon close inspection of the tire well side, I could see that before its green paint job it had the NOS grey primer. The car doesn't show any signs of impact, so maybe it was a really small fender bender? Buying a correct style repro for this car would be simply for looks. With this car being so cobbled together anyway, I felt it was a waste of money. I like the history of this apron and the fit is excellent, and I believe German as well. While not all original to the car, at least all the front sheet metal is now German with a decent fit.

The sunroof was not without it's problems. At some point a PO drilled out the captive nuts threads and installed the rails with pop rivets. The rivet heads did not sit low enough, so the rollers were always getting hung up. You could jiggle the mechanism and it would slide ok. I knew that once a headliner was in place, this wouldn't be possible. So, I carefully drilled the rivets and retapped the captive nuts. What a bitch! They jiggle all around it's very frustrating. Now, the screws needed were much larger so I had to use Allen heads and grind down the heads. Then, the holes in the aluminum rails were drilled to allow the bigger screws to sit flush.
The other culprit causing sloppy ragtop motion was loose rivets in the mechanism. I spot welded it to reinforce and the used some machine screws and loctite to ensure it never happens again. With a new roller kit, the ragtop slides smoothly now. After dealing with it for so many years, I'm very happy now.

Spot weld cutters are a must for VW metal repair!
On the left side a PO attempted to narrow the bracket, but just got it all wrong and useless. I think the pics tell the story. With a botched attempt to correct the mounts on the driver side, the PO just said forget the right side, it won't matter.
Now that I know how important the body mounts are for door gaps, it's all getting done once and for all. I am grateful another PO put it back on a swing axle pan though, and it's fairly correct being a 59.
The heater channels look super clean, so I ask myself why was the pan swapped? I don't think rot was the reason. I think someone decided IRS was better when they slammed it and probably pulled leaves out of the beam and hacked the front fender wells to clear the tie rods. How it ended up back on a swing axle pan is a mystery. Maybe the IRS pan was a piece of shit? People like to think the grass is greener on the other side but clearly this is not the case.

I'm pre fitting everything I can to the car before paint. Especially stuff requiring drilling holes and of course, welding.
I've been sitting on these OG popouts for about 10 years. I finally decided to do the inner and outer seals and buy pinch welt, missing hardware and latches. Originally I was going to do the correct ($$$) blue/gray 58/59 interior, but my lady hates white accents on the interior, so all the little details will be black, grey or body color. No white at all. Probably grey seat covers with black piping, OG style grey headliner, grey carpet, black OG style mats. I think it will look great with this body color.

It was time to investigate why the driver door was so nice but sloppy at the hinges. You had to lift the door at the handle about 1/8" to get it to shut. On closer inspection, the metal was tearing around the hinge rivets- only 3 total were actually still intact and tight. All damage fixed and new hinges installed. Never assume it's just a worn pin! Always look at the rivets.
