Checking the fit of the OG heavy dash trim. The aftermarket trim on the radio block off plate is waaaaaay off. ^^^^^ This is why you pre fit everything. Sapphire I radio going in instead. At least that will go with the fact the car has speakers now.

Made some different looking mesh inserts from some speaker grills I was going to throw in the garbage.

New WW running boards with the mats dyed grey and amber LED turn signals mounted underneath. I'll add another set of signals that are more visible from the front.

Pretty nice 4 tab hood from a Diamond Green oval that was torn and painted blue at some point. Typical tear at the prop and cracks at the handle area. I made reinforcement plates and spot welded them behind the repairs so, hopefully, they never come back.

I wanted to try some new products since I finished my single cab. This primer is from Clausen, it's called "All-U-Need". It is a polyester high build primer that has self etching and sealing properties. Seems to fit the bill perfectly for a black paint job requiring a lot of block sanding. It's basically like a spray on body filler. I used the Evercoat stuff last time but I like this one much better.

I got sick of the antenna being on the driver side, so I moved it to the other side where it's closer to the stereo anyway. It just always seemed to be in the way when you are walking by to get in or out of the car.

The last pic shows a pretty cool history of paint jobs and yet another confirmation that black is the original color.

Here's a good shot of the hackery to the inner wheel wells. Crying or Very sad

There is no other damage or rust so I am choosing to leave them as is, but without jagged sharp edges. I took some 3/8" steel tubing, cut a slit into it lengthwise and bent it to fit. Another decision based on the cars lack of originality but I'm ok with it since it's not a visible area.

You'll notice the nasty kink in the brake hoses. I'm not sure how it happened but it's the complete kit as I got it from CB. New hoses are a bit longer and I'm converting it to AN fittings with a 45 degree adapter so the hard angle is taken off that crimped end of the hose.

While checking the fit and adjustment of the decklid, something just didn't seem right. I never noticed before, but something had fallen on the rear vents at some point and was repaired and bondoed over. They did an ok job of pulling the dent. It's amazing what you see when you focus on panel gaps and fit, which I always put off to do someday. Well, now I know what I'm doing and that day has come.

I made a contour gauge out of cardboard and sure enough, it revealed where the damage was. Dented towards the center, but also raised towards the side of the car. People pay attention to low spots in bodywork but you can't forget about the highs too.

Ratchet strap and heating the panel got it back to shape. It wasn't fast- about 3 hours of little pulls at a time and used heat at the very end of the process as the metal didn't want to stretch back to shape. Some hammer and dolly work at the high spot to finish it off. Pulling the low spot first helped relieve the tension on the high spot.

The driver seat always felt a little flimsy. Not only was the back broken, but the lower bar was completely missing. No sweat to replace it after some time cutting the slot into a piece of tube.

The passenger seat was in pretty good shape. The driver side was beat! Half of the track on one side was missing and it just sucked and wobbled around. A PO rewelded it, but then it was just a rewelded piece of junk. I replaced it with a NOS track from a samba seller. Razz

I saw the damage and thought damn, I need a new frame or rob a track off another junk frame. I looked on the classifieds and there it was.... Wow. It's not the kind of part people usually save for 50 years. How it didn't end up lost or in the garbage amazes me.

Ever since I've had the car, it's had the cheap roller pedal. It sucks. One day I decided to figure out how to put the stock pedal back in and noticed the hinge bracket welded to the pan was bent to hell. It was just one more thing to pile on the to do list. I got serious and tackled it once and for all.

I had this repro gas pedal and decided to make do with what I have. A pretty decent pedal assembly that I had already replaced the clutch hook. First, I removed the C shaped bracket for the stock lever (67+ style pedal) so the roller had room to work. Then, I sectioned it to make it long enough to work. I was able to heat the hinge bracket and it's perfect again

I used a washer to shim the roller pedal and get rid of the slop. A spring attaches from it to the tab on the back of the flat pedal and it works pretty awesome now. The stock rubber pad is too short now so I'll figure out what I want to do with it later. The roller stays centered in between the rolled edges of the flat pedal. As long as the spring holds them together, it works surprisingly well.

Really enjoying this thread. Roachdub58, your metal work and welding skills are to be commended. Keep up the great work.

Pedals are now ready to go. The main thing I wanted to do besides paint was get rid of the weak point at the clutch hook. I welded a grade 8 flange head bolt and filed a bronze bushing until it was a press fit into the cable eyelet. I'll soak the bushing in oil overnight, add grease to everything and it should wear a lot slower than the stock setup. I made it by design that if the bushing happens to wear all the way through, the pedal will still do it's job until I get a chance to fix it. With just the hook configuration, once it breaks, the pedal is completely dead in the water.

I never paint one thing at a time if I can help it. All loose pan related parts get done in manageable batches. My plan is to remove the body from the pan and have them back together as fast as possible. It won't be necessary to have it apart for long since welding repairs will be minimal. In the meantime, I can have all the parts ready to go back on as soon as paint, plumbing, etc are all handled. The cosmetic body parts will all be done in base/clear. The pan and chassis stuff is single stage acrylic urethane. I got a gallon of this mid grade stuff for free and it's been in my closet for a while so this is the perfect use for it. Someone mixed it for a customer and they never came back for it. It has a tiny amount of metallic that's not really visible when it's dry. It pays to shop around and get to know the guys you buy paint from. Ask them if they have mixed cans of stuff they can't sell. It never hurts to ask, this gallon of paint I got was forgotten about and left on a shelf for 5 years. I sampled a little bit and it turned out to be totally usable after a few minutes of shaking.

I bought the mid mount years ago but was never able to install it. From what I understand, the frame horns are shaped differently on later pans, so I cut it apart, mocked up a gutted trans and welded in an extra section to the mid mount. I've broken a nosecone before, so I like the extra insurance.

The car came to me with a later model steering box. After a few years of driving, it was done. I picked up an early box from my buddy's boneyard. Here it is all taken apart for inspection and new seals. It slung gear oil everywhere under the car! Since then, it's been packed with grease, but slowly stuff still kept oozing out over time.

The paint and bodywork never seems to end. There's so much to clean, prep, mask etc. if you don't have a booth, there's always wind and temperature to watch for too. I get workers on all sides of my house taking care if the almond trees and they make quite a lot of dust if I'm not careful I'm screwed!

Mostly, I need the steering parts painted so I can get it back together, but it's a waste to not do as many small parts I can hang. Also, axle tubes need paint so I can get the trans back together hopefully by this winter. For now, I've gotta take advantage of the weather.

This car isn't that low but I prefer the Chinese axle boots for a lowered bug. I've had a few sets of the German rubber ones that look a lot better but don't last long no matter where I clock the seam. I guess it's the angle of the tubes?

Wiper assembly almost finished. IIRC, it's a 67 2 speed self parking motor on the early frame. I'm going to replace the linkage bushings and maybe the shafts, they are ok but one is worn a lot more than the other.

I cleaned up the motor cover with a Scotch Brite. After seeing how nasty the inside of my single cab's motor was, I decided now is the time to refresh this one. Removed the plate that holds the gears in place on the back, scraped old grease out and re packed with synthetic good stuff. The OG brown grease dries out and that causes binding and breakage to the sensitive plastic gear.
