If you don't get any help here I'd go to this site and ask away (if you haven't done so already): VWar.org _________________ '74 Zambezi green Ghia vert, autostick, 101k

The Autostick's clutch is vacuum-operated and controlled by a small switch at the bottom of the gearshift lever. Possible causes of your problem are either a vacuum leak somewhere in the system (most likely), or a dodgy control switch.
As for a fix, you'll need to locate the vacuum leak and eliminate it, and/or replace the control switch, or at least clean the switch's contacts. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

Well I found and old post on VWar.org that sounded like my problem. The diaphragm in the vacuum control valve might be bad. My car sat from 88. I pulled it apart it apart , diaphragm was in good shape, blew it out, cleaned. I pulled the air filter and cleaned it. Pulled the electric end with the big spring, cleaned and lubed it. Put it back in and it worked alot better. Now just to tune it in a little more. Thanks for all the help ! _________________ Karl Bower |

That is what I was going to recommend. You can also adjust the control valve once you get the motor all tuned in. The other thing I was going to recommend is to make sure you are using an A/S carb and the correct Vac Port. They have an extra vacuum tap for the A/S control. If you are using wrong one you may be pulling too much vacuum. If it turns out your carb was replaced with a manual car Carb you can drill the correct port out and add a piece of copper tube to tap into. I found the instructions on how to do that for my old A/S Ghia on VWar.org. |
