Making my winter list

add a reserve valve
Finish rear bumper
Rebuild correct fuel pump
Restore jack
Fill ashtray hole. Think I will 3D print a vase to go in the hole
Restore gas heater
Splash pan
Rebuild steering box
All new door seals. Ones I have are cheep and don't seal well.
Rebuild spare engine and transmission

Alot of these were on last year's list...

ideas for the ashtray hole:

convert to USB charging station
convert to GPS holder

not shooting down the vase idea, just thinking of things people want in their cars today.

I have duel USB hidden under the dash and a suction cup cell mount on dash. I will leave a little notch for the mount's wireless charger cable.

We keep sticking flowers in the ashtray hole though. Smile I may try to find an ashtray cover and paint it so it looks like a real ashtray when closed.

Time to get the bus out soon. Still salt on the roads but that should get washed of in a week or two if we don't get any more winter weather.

So getting the rear bumper done. Only a couple years behind scheduled. Basically needed a skim coat of filler over the complete bumper. I hope to paint it this week so the bus can be moved from storage into the shop.

Primer on the bumper parts.

Looks good but will need a few coats and sanding. Back side of bumper needs work though. Lots of rust pitting so a quick skim coat of filler should do.

Smooth and last coat of primer on. Back side is not perfect but won't show in the reflection and will likely be full of dirt after the first drive anyway. Smile

Finally got the bumper painted. Had to wait for paint gun parts. Gun still not painting great but not a problem for this stuff.

Forgot to drill hole for awning pole but need to drill the front bumper anyways so will just touch up the paint after.

Happy with it and no black flies. Looks like I will be running a rear bumper this year. Smile

Bumper assembled

Need to find out where the rubber squares go. They seem a little large to go where i have them.. Also the 2 rubber stoppers that came with the fastener kit. I assume they go in the bottom bus corners but i will try to find a diagram that shows them.

The rubber squares go under that single splash pan fastener between the bumper bracket and the pan.

The rubber buttons go in the holes under your bus' rear corners to prevent chaffing between the pan and the bus.

In case this photo is confusing:
This is looking backwards toward the rear bumper/splash pan

Thanks!

I thought that may be the case but seemed more important to protect the paint on sides.

I may make rubber washers to protect the paint also. I can make them small enough to not show when installed.

Yes, the sides where the larger bolt passes through is metal on metal.
It's weird there's no protector but some people do put a little rubber washer there.
Go for it

Bumper on. Only 3 years in the making. Haha

Had to add a small shim to get it level. I assume between the bent brackets, frame and bumper that something wasn't fixed perfect.

Made some gaskets for the sides to protect the paint. Was a pain to get the bolts lined up on sides. The splash pans had been quite bent also so took a bit of work to get things fitting.

Sprayed all fasteners with Rust Check after.

Yes, the sides are a pain but if you leave the brackets and other mounting bolts a little loose at first, it's easier to get everything aligned.

Maybe harder if you straightened original splash pans - they are often bent in weird ways from little bumper impacts over the years.

Too late now but for others reading.

It has been in Nova Scotia for 50 years at least. Birth certificate is on order...

I started a thread over in the barndoor section.

Encountered a slight issue on the last day of a 15 day trip. Smile

Started it to head home and instant knock. One of thous knocks that make you expect a bunch of oil and metal bits will soon be dropped out the bottom.

Called step son to bring the trailer. We were only 3 hours from home.

Got home and pulled the engine apart because we needed to know what happened. Smile everything was perfect... few theories but at least it is nothing that will destroy the engine immediately so we will find it. If it actually does it again...

details at
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9692218

I really need to get the spare engine and transmission done so we can do quick swaps if anything happens on trips. Lot nicer to loose a day or so for someone to drive an engine to us than loose the rest of a vacation. Just lucky it was as we were leaving for home.

I broke a ring once and everytime that hole fired it made the piston skirt hit the cylinder wall. Sounded like a rod bearing. Got louder the more loaded up hill or take off.

Another time I had a stuck wrist pin but that knock was all the time cranking or running and you said "no coil no knock" so doubt that.

My 6volt spare engine is called "The Knocker" as it has a tight lifter that snaps back when the valve spring pushes it loose. It too sounds like a rod knock but will go forever like that.
