Started converting the lid to a church key

I was undecided whether to fix the old section I had or build a new one. Decided to give a try to building the new piece.

Came out good. Just need to shape and weld the inner lip. I will finish the skin before welding in the frame.

Bit more on the engine cover tonight.

The new outside part was pitted quit bad and I needed to replace some of the lip so decided to try making a new one. Biggest problem was creating the indent for the cover. Used a hole saw to make two sides of a die. Taped one on each side and clamped in vise. It may be a little deeper than original but looks correct with the cover in place.

Skin welded. just a bit more work on the frame and I can finish this off.

Engine lid finally ready for blasting.

I didn't get a good weld on the tapping plate and it fell off. Used some bolts to clamp it tight and drilled two holes and plug welded it. Won't fall off now.

Started the rear cargo door.

Couldn't bend the complete part with my home made brake so will weld on the lip after.

Mounted on the bus to make sure I was getting it correct. Found it is a lot easier to check as you go than to finish and then find the problem. Smile

Door frame welded and checked.

It is going to be a pain getting the skin perfect. Both doors were bent up quite a bit.

Rear cargo door almost done. Just need to weld in a few dozen screw holes and it will be ready for blasting.

Skin pached. The patch came out great but the upper section is wavy from old damage. Probably should have had the skin changed from belt down. A thin layer of filler will fix it though.

Frame of front cargo door mostly done.

Would have had it finished but decided to grind a slot in the palm of my hand. Grinder cord got hooked and flipped it around when I went to move. Unlike a finger you can't just wrap tape around your palm and move on. Smile

Just realised this is the last bit of metal work I have left.

Ouch! This was prophetic in a weird way :

Cargo doors almost done.

Got the bottom repaired on the front one and added the handle indent.

Just a few more screw holes to weld in and some grinding and they are ready for blasting.

Good job on that decklid conversion 👏🏽 Those doors are not as easy as they look either. I commend anybody doing inner and outer lower cargo doors. Not easy as it looks!

Thanks.

Those doors are definitely time consuming. Lot of detail. I had each on and off 10 time I'm sure to check that they still fit. Once you cut the rust out they get quite floppy.

Been very busy the last couple weeks but finally got a few minutes on it today.

Stripped the hatch. In good shape. Uncovered a bit of rust in one corner of the window. And at some point someone cut and bent a section of the frame.

Hatch ready for blasting.

It was off a deluxe so had lots of holes to clean out and weld in.

Back at it. Hoped to get some done over the holidays but didn't get the time.

Little cool today in the shop. Blizzard outside.

Engine lid had bulged in the plate area. It was almost good enough but would show a little from the back. I never did get a shrinking disk so cut a slot and welded it back. Nice and flat now.

That is Celsius so just a bit below freezing inside. Around -15c outside with high winds today. Not nearly as cold as you are thinking. Smile Thursday it was +10c with heavy rain.

After scraping the paint of the right door I found some thin metal that needed replacing. Also found some filler so required some work to get the skin smooth.

So all the doors, hatches and lids are ready for blasting. Smile I am going to build a blasting cabinet big enough for the doors. I don't want the shop in the mess it was last year with the blasting dust and it's to cold outside.

Been a busy month so little progress.

Started building a blasting cabinet out of some scrap that was laying around. It's big enough to do my doors and stuff. I don't want the mess in the shop and its too cold and wet outside. I will hook up a fan to suck to air out of the cabinet and blow it outside. Hopefully I can get it done this week.

I misplaced or threw out my original striker plate for the cargo doors. I lost it then found it last spring. I'm sure it will turn up as soon as I get a new one. The one that came on my replacement floor is crap.

Hopefully I can start making progress by next week.
